From the desk of our S.T.E.A.M. Lab This week in STEAM we dove into explorations of our five senses and the organs that help us with our senses. ECE2 explored their sense of touch through a sensory walk in buckets filled with different textures. They also explored vision through the introduction of our STEAM kids' cam. Photos taken by our two year olds can be found here . ECE15 and ECE2 sorted soft and smooth items from hard and rough ones. Our ECE3 and ECE4 used scented paint to explore their sense of smell. Lower school students compared tools that scientists use, comparing and contrasting those that someone invented versus those that we were born with, such as our five senses. Laws of the Universe The first, second, and third grade Montessori class learned a theory of how the Universe was created. There were many scientific demonstrations to help the students understand the laws of the universe. Principal Rivkie Gottlieb also attended and helped integrate the Jewish understanding of Creation.

American Identity Middle School students in the Jewish Carpenters Explo class are working on building a stained-glass mechitza (partition) for RMBA's Beren/Jefferson Bet Midrash. As the students continue to perfect their window designs, they learned how to solder some sample pieces of glass together. Those soldering skills will be needed later this semester as the students fashion a total of 12 stained-glass windows for the mechitza , whose designs will pay tribute to a dozen different Jewish women of valor. Right Hand Students in Morah Esther's ECE2 class have been spending time learning all about saying the Shema. Each morning when they say Shema they are also tasked with identifying their picture on the wall, and making sure their right hand is covering their eyes as they say the blessing.

Back to School Night We were happy to see so many of our parents at our Back to School Nights (curriculum nights) this week. We were impressed by how engaged and excited everyone was to hear all about our various ways of learning. The students always get a kick out of finding out that their parent(s) visited their classroom and even sat in their seats. Repentance During the month of Elul, a dedicated group of students learn about teshuva (repentance) with Rabbi Kellerman each morning before first period. Through the generosity of an anonymous donor each participant was given a copy of The Power of Teshuva to keep for his or her own library.

Yeshiva University Visit The Director of Admissions at Yeshiva University came to speak to our Juniors and Seniors about college admissions and what life might be like as a Stern or YU student. BIMA Middle school students in Ms. Goldstein and Mrs. Rosenzweig’s BIMA elective have started working on various STEM projects, including: designing 3D mezzuzah cases and a Ferris wheel that will run on a motor.

Extra Fun Extracurricular and after school activities kicked off this week for our early childhood and lower school students. Activities include cooking club, theater, soccer, kung fu, ballet, and chess! Pictured above is the cooking class as the students prepared to make a delicious fruit salad. Each week the students learn beginner cooking skills while the lessons are connected to the chagim (holidays), parsha (weekly Torah portion), and the world around us. Shofar Sounds Thank you so much to Mr. Sheldon Bootin who has been coming to RMBA to blow the shofar (musical horn) for our early childhood and lower school students throughout the month of Elul. Thank you to Jacob Plumb (11th grade) who has been blowing the shofar for our upper school students.
