The Power of Persistent Prayer

A Presentation by The Reverend Dr. Stephen Applegate
Saturday, September 8, 10:00 am in the Bridal Parlor

Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up. He said: “In a certain town there was a judge who neither feared God nor cared what people thought. And there was a widow in that town who kept coming to him with the plea, ‘Grant me justice against my adversary.’ For some time he refused. But finally he said to himself, “Even though I don't fear God or care what people think, yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will see that she gets justice, so that she won't eventually come and attack me!"  Luke 18: 1-5

David and Jonni Steckler have recently joined St. Christopher’s. Both are enjoying retirement in Carmel. David retired after serving as an FBI Agent from 1969 to1996; Jonni retired after more than 30 years as a flight attendant for American Airlines. Jonni previously served for six years as a Deacon at Wilton Presbyterian Church in Wilton, Connecticut. They both enjoy cooking, golf, entertaining, Euchre, and fitness. The parents of adult children, a daughter and a son, the Stecklers attend the 10:00 am service.

D r. Michael Goupil is among the newcomers to St. Christopher's 7:45 am service. He moved to Carmel where he has family. A dentist with a specialty in Oral and Maxillofaciall Surgery, he served in the U.S. Air Force Dental Corps and retired as a Colonel. Dr. Goupil comes to us from Connecticut where he was a member of the faculty at the University of Connecticut School of Dental Medicine.
Would you like to serve as a delegate to Diocesan Convention?

The 181st Convention of the Episcopal Diocese of Indianapolis will be held at the Monroe Convention Center, 302 S. College Ave. in Bloomington, on Friday and Saturday, November 16 and 17. The Diocesan Convention is part business meeting, part “church family reunion,” and part prayerful celebration of our common life in Christ shared by Episcopal churches in central and southern Indiana.

Your Vestry is looking for five lay people who would like to represent St. Christopher’s at the Convention, which will begin at 10:00 am on Friday. The Convention will include a banquet and dance party on Friday evening. It will end following a celebration of Holy Eucharist beginning at 11:00 am on Saturday.

The keynote address and the sermon at the convention eucharist will be by the Rev. Dwight J. Zscheile, Vice President of Innovation and Associate Professor of Congregational Mission and Leadership at Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota. Zscheile is an Episcopal priest and a consultant with The Missional Network. He is author of The Agile Church: Spirit-Led Innovation in an Uncertain Age (Morehouse Publishing, 2014), People of the Way: Renewing Episcopal Identity (Morehouse Publishing, 2012) and The Missional Church in Perspective: Mapping Trends and Shaping the Conversation (with Craig Van Gelder, Baker Academic 2011).

St. Christopher’s Vestry will elect convention delegates at its regularly scheduled meeting on September 19. If you would like to be considered, please submit your name to Father Stephen (sapplegate@stchriscarmel.org) or Fred Winters (fgwcarmel@gmail.com) by September 12. Expenses for delegates, which include overnight accommodations, and lunch and dinner on Friday, will be covered by St. Christopher’s.
The Summer Lunch Families Thank You

Our 19 Summer Lunch families have expressed gratitude for your generosity. They wrote notes of thanks in English, Spanish, and Arabic on a poster that was placed near the Parish Hall. Some of the notes are difficult to see because the writing is small and very light, so we've captured and enlarged bits of them for you to see.
Labor Day Observance

The church office will be closed on Monday, September 3, in observance of Labor Day. It will open on Tuesday morning, September 4, and return to regular business hours: 8:30 am to 12 Noon and 1:00 to 4:30 pm.

Please note: The deadline for announcements and articles for the September 5 issue of The Weekly News is Friday, August 31, 5:00 pm.

We wish you a safe, relaxing, and blessed Labor Day.

What an amazing Ministry Fair!

It was wonderful to see all the ministries we're involved in represented in one place at the same time! Thank you to all the ministry representatives who pulled out all the stops to make the day so special with your displays. Truly, the Holy spirit is at work at St. Christopher's!

Thanks to Marty Torrance and Carolyn Parrott who captured pictures of the Fair. You'll find some of their photos in the Photo Gallery on our website. Look for the 2018 Gallery and the Ministry Fair.
