Going Greek?

If you're returning to Tulane to participate in Panhellenic Sorority Recruitment, make sure you've done everything necessary to arrive early in Spring 2020. Don't forget to  register and read the Recruitment rules ! If you have any questions, email Julia Hankins at jhankins@tulane.edu and check out Tulane's Panhellenic Recruitment  website
Recruitment is going to be a busy time, so set yourself up for success by taking care of yourself! At times, you might feel like you hit the ground running, but there's no need to fret. Get plenty of rest, give yourself time to unwind each day, and try to maintain a level head throughout this process. You're going to meet so many people, it might feel overwhelming! Recruitment is all about connecting with others who share your drive, ambitions, and values, but, as Shakespeare says, "This above all: to thine own self be true." Know what you stand for, know the kind of environment that suits you, and know who will help you to thrive. The rest will follow!
Move-In in Style

Make your move-in as easy as possible with our quick tips!
  • Pack smartly! Make sure that you (and a helper) can carry everything you're bringing, as elevators will be crowded and our Move-In Krewe may not be available. You'll also be sharing your space with others, so keep in mind how much you want to bring.

  • Ship if you can! If you want to ship a box or two to campus before you arrive, contact Mail Services at mailbox@tulane.edu with any questions, and make sure you adhere to their guidelines. If you ship, be sure to use wrapping for fragile objects and don't overfill the boxes.

  • Make a list of must-brings! Before you do anything, sit down and make a list of things you have to bring. These can be important things like your social security card and bedsheets or sentimental things like your favorite sweatshirt!
Contact housing@tulane.edu with any questions you have about Move-In and Housing, and consult your Spring Move-In Guide as needed!

Ask a PA: Advice on College Must-Haves, New Orleans, and More

"Hey, PAs! I'm new to New Orleans, and I'm looking forward to exploring the city beyond the French Quarter. What can I do?"
Drew: Hey! I'm originally from Chicago, so I was similarly excited to move to a new place! New Orleans has a little bit of everything, so really, let your interests guide you. Do you like museums? Check out the New Orleans Museum of Art, the National World War II Museum, or the Pharmacy Museum. Music? Go to a show at Gasa Gasa or the world famous Tipitina's. Bike around the city, go to one of our many festivals, or kayak in City Park. There's something here for everyone!

Anfernee: Start close to campus. While it's true that New Orleans isn't only the French Quarter, it's also all around us and we tend to forget how close we are to the city. I'm from New Orleans and the Westbank, so coming to Tulane was just taking a trip across the river. Finding a true New Orleans experience started from going to small restaurants and live music/theatre venues in the Downtown area. From there, I kept going back to places I grew up with - Audubon Park, the Riverwalk, Congo Square, Saenger Theater, NOMA, the National WWII Museum, and the French Market - and always made time to go to my favorite music or food festivals when I could afford the time and the admittance. Lastly, you can find a local non-profit in the city to work with that you find interesting and out of your academic field. Take some time while you're here and convince some of the people around you to try something new. You never know what you could find.

"I'm having trouble packing for college. It's getting a bit overwhelming. What are some must-haves to bring with me?"
Drew: For New Orleans, an umbrella and a good pair of rain boots! For yourself, a few things that bring you peace, whether that's your favorite sweater, some pictures from home, or a beloved book. If you feel overwhelmed, try to take a step back and breathe. Do a little bit everyday, not all at once, and be thoughtful about what you're bringing. Make a list if that would help, or lay everything out before you put it in a box or suitcase.

Anfernee: Honestly, all you really need are clothes, personal hygiene supplies, and memorabilia. Clothes that make you feel comfortable and confident - and a jacket for when it gets cold - will help you acclimate to the campus. Everything else you can get here. You may have to share a bedroom space with other students, so you won't have a lot of room to bring everything with you. Freshman year, I brought half of my closet, bed spread, hygiene products, my laptop and PS4, and my stuffed wolf with my dog's old collar.

"I'm nervous about coming to Tulane. Everyone will know each other and that could make it hard for me to make friends. How can I connect with people and join the community?"
Drew: That's a very normal and understandable feeling! I think there are a  few things to keep in mind that will help you. First, more people than you think have similar worries. We have hundreds of transfer students and Spring Scholars arriving on campus, so you aren't alone! Second, we continuously meet new folks throughout college, not just on day one. Some of my closest friends are people I didn't meet until junior or senior year! Last, if you want to get involved, join a club sports team or a student organization. Audition for a play! Attend a JAUNT activity! There's so many options for you!

Anfernee: I completely hear you. Finding your people can be tough, especially when it seems everyone else has already made their groups. However, I guarantee you that even those who have been here for three years are feeling the same way. My best advice is to have patience and stay authentic to yourself. Wave to your classmates/floor-mates/Orientation group when you see them across campus or out at events. Take the chance to find people at meet-ups and clubs. Try grabbing a bite with your roommate, or join your classmates while their doing homework in the library, or even join a committee or club that shares your hobbies and interests. Just remember to give it time.
