Day 1: Embracing Anti-Racism

Welcome! YWCA Glendale is honored to have you join us for our first 21 Day Racial Equity & Social Justice Challenge. Together, we will be embarking on a journey to better understand how racial and social injustices impact our country and community and how we can work individually and collectively to undo this harm.

Over the next 21 days, you will receive content related to personal and structural forms of racism, as well as localized content to illustrate the ways in which our communities have perpetuated racism - and the work that has been done/is being done to address those injustices. During the Challenge, you will be introduced to terms that may be entirely new or familiar. We invite you to review this glossary of terms that will help clarify definitions as you move through this Challenge.

We thank our sister YWCA chapters for their work in developing Challenge content, our staff and members of the Coalition for an Anti-Racist Glendale for creating and sourcing new and localized material, and our partners at Saybrook University for supporting with the content review and evaluation of this Challenge. Please be sure to click on the pre-challenge survey link above so we can better understand what our community is looking to accomplish through its participation and how we can be of support.

Our hope is that this Challenge supports you in building foundational knowledge on what it means to be anti-racist and gives you the connections and resources to begin taking anti-racist action in your own life and in the communities you are a part of. Thank you for joining us. We are grateful for your commitment to this Challenge and for your openness to growing with us.

With gratitude,

Tara Peterson, CEO
TODAY’S CHALLENGE:

IF YOU HAVE:
Read this article to understand why being 'non racist' isn't enough - and how to put in the work to be anti-racist.
Listen to this podcast featuring historian Ibram X. Kendi, author of How to be An Antiracist.
Explore this interactive article that outlines how to make unbiased choices.
As we begin this Challenge, we pay homage to the Gabrieliño-Tongva people upon whose land this Challenge was developed. We ask that you consider adopting a land acknowledgment practice when you open events or meetings to honor the custodians of the land upon which you gather. We also invite you to explore Glendale's Reflectspace Gallery virtual exhibit: Everywhere and Nowhere: Indigenous in America (until January 31st). This exhibition investigates the myriad ways in which Native Americans are represented and misrepresented through popular culture imagery while creating a counterpoint to this imagery through humanistic photography and contemporary art by two Native artists.
