It takes a "village" to keep downtown Waynesville humming. There are hundreds of pieces to the puzzle that work in partnership, though these villager pieces may not know each other, to fit together the unique qualities of our village (makes me smile when people call Waynesville that). I thought I would introduce you to some that you may or may not know.
Here's Justin.
He delivers our mail to INSIDE the gallery, though we have a mailbox outside, truly through rain, sleet, snow or hail. Always pleasant with a chuckle about the trove of ULINE catalogues we receive, I encountered him at the bank recently. Justin knew each one of the customers waiting, joking about knowing us all. Growing up, we lived in a very residential neighborhood where the mailman delivered letters to the houses, except ours. Our mail was delivered to my parents' doctors office. Despite, we would wait with hopeful pleas to the mailman to bring us some mail. Poor thing.

ociation which orchestrates our events. DWA is a key driving force to attract visitors and keep them coming back. Tiffani is quite the
computer savvy young face downtown who specializes in producing surveys and graphs to better our event
attempts. She delivers to the merchants posters and needed marketing paraphernalia.

Monica. She delivers farm fresh eggs downtown on Wednesdays. Inventory has been low l
ately due to a raccoon infestation. What is more small-town than an "Egg Lady" (that is what we c
all her)? She reminds me of my childhood when milk was delivered to the back door and we had "the bean lady" that would come around in the summer with fresh vegetables. As a side bonus, Monica is a multi-talented artist. Who knows, maybe one day you will see her work in the gallery.
Here's Jack. He delivers The Mountaineer, a local newspaper, to our mailbox thr ee times a week. No matter the weather, that paper is in our box. I pretty much check the obituaries and make sure I am not in there. I learned to read by reading the newspaper, one word at a time. I like paper. Not into reading books, magazines, newspapers on line. Old school. Maybe I will come around ..... never thought I would use a digital camera vs film. What was I thinking?!? Jack always has a cheery "hello" for us as he comes in the gallery on Wednesdays to deliver "The Guide" (where I promote our artist demonstration events).
Here are Gavin and Katee. He is the mayor and they live  downtown, so they are frequently seen walking the streets or sitting on one of the sidewalk benches. From there Gavin gets a unique bird's eye view of what is really happening downtown. The good and the bad. He can be seen conversing with locals and guests. And from that he can react and make our "village" even more appealing. He is our rock and we appreciate all that he does for downtown.

Where did the summer go?? Ours has been absolutely amazing thanks to those that were able to come in and shop. And then, I always say, "Once Labor Day hits, it's Christmastime." So, hold onto your hat!!

Watercolor and acrylic artist Pam Haddock will be demonstrating at Twigs and Leaves Gallery during Art After Dark Friday, September 7, 6-9PM. As Western North Carolina, Pam's mountain river and stream inspiration is enhanced with striking movement.

1998 was a big year for Bob and Lucy Gibson. They married. Twigs and Leaves was created and they were one of the original jewelry artists to display their pieces in the gallery. 20 years later, both marriages are thriving.
Lucy and Bob Gibson live and work in Canton in Western North Carolina. Their studio home is on the side of a mountain surrounded by the remnants of an old apple orchard and the ever-changing beauty of the Blue R
idge Mountains.
Their environment provides a constant and limitless source
of inspiration for both their lives and their designs. When observed clos

, Lucy and Bob note the forms, textures and colors of nature yield elegant and subtle forms they interpret through their jewelry.
Lucy and Bob work primarily in sterling silver and gold-filled wire, combining delicate forms with
natural semi-precious stones.

Smoky Mountain Folk Festival
August 31st-September 1st

The 48th Annual Smoky Mountain Folk Festival, to be held at Lake Junaluska Conference & Retreat Center, will offer two nights of the finest traditional music and dance of the Southern Appalachian Region. The main shows begin at 6:30 p.m. on the grand stage of Stuart Auditorium overlooking beautiful Lake Junaluska. Both nights will include a rich variety of the region's finest fiddlers, banjo players, string bands, ballad singers, buck dancers, and square dance teams as well as the marvelous sounds of dulcimer, harmonica, jew's harp, bagpipes, spoons, saws, and folk ensembles.
Tickets are $12/night in advance, $14/night at the door, 12-years-old and under free.
Purchase tickets at the Bethea Welcome Center.

Downtown is Alive at Night! Bring your dancing shoes and a chair and head to Main Street for an evening of live music featuring oldies and goldies, bluegrass, country rock, and more, music 7PM - 10PM"Kids on Main" children's activities for our younger downtown visitors are held prior to the party from 6:00 -7:00. Eats and treats on the street and downtown restaurants are open. No animals allowed at downtown events.
