A great teacher is worth their weight in gold. Having served as a classroom teacher at the middle, high school, and post-secondary levels plus having worked with teachers in Pre-K through post-secondary, we know that teachers don't teach for the money.  
 
So, what are the intrinsic benefits of student interaction and effort that keep teachers in the profession? Interestingly, both teachers and students have the same intrinsic needs and they are dependent upon each other "to fill their buckets." Is there any reason why we can't operate "respectful reciprocity" within a classroom? If we do, that communication blossoms into respectful reciprocity among students, among teachers, among parents, among community and among alumni. It doesn't seem like it should be that hard to achieve. Yet, schools have been chasing this utopia for generations.  
 
Here are some of the characteristics that work both ways:

1. Class participation - teachers engaging with students and students engaging with their teachers/other students
2. Asking questions - teachers and students asking clarifying questions of each other
3. Affirming when their teacher has presented something interesting - an interesting lesson delivered by a teacher/an interesting insight provided by a student.
4. Greeting them when students arrive in class - both students and teachers can greet each other
5. Wishing them well - both students and teachers can wish each other well for the remainder of their day.

Why not us? Why not now?
