Acceleration East High School
Community Brief
Monday, September 9, 2019

A great teacher is worth their weight in gold. Having served as a classroom teacher at the middle, high school, and post-secondary levels plus having worked with teachers in Pre-K through post-secondary, we know that teachers don't teach for the money.

So, what are the intrinsic benefits of student interaction and effort that keep teachers in the profession? Interestingly, both teachers and students have the same intrinsic needs and they are dependent upon each other "to fill their buckets." Is there any reason why we can't operate "respectful reciprocity" within a classroom? If we do, that communication blossoms into respectful reciprocity among students, among teachers, among parents, among community and among alumni. It doesn't seem like it should be that hard to achieve. Yet, schools have been chasing this utopia for generations.

Here are some of the characteristics that work both ways:

1. Class participation - teachers engaging with students and students engaging with their teachers/other students
2. Asking questions - teachers and students asking clarifying questions of each other
3. Affirming when their teacher has presented something interesting - an interesting lesson delivered by a teacher/an interesting insight provided by a student.
4. Greeting them when students arrive in class - both students and teachers can greet each other
5. Wishing them well - both students and teachers can wish each other well for the remainder of their day.

Why not us? Why not now?

With Phoenix Pride,

Mr. Doug Loftus

Rigor in the Classroom
Environmental Science with Mrs. Singh

Mrs. Singh is pictured directing her Environmental Science students how to go about calculating certain answers during a lab last month.

Above and just below: The primary purpose of this lab was to use the Scientific Method to solve a problem. To make it interesting, the lab was geared around bubble gum but required each of the Scientific Method's steps such as forming an initial question, creating an hypothesis and testing it, analyzing data, etc. As you can see, Mrs. Singh had her students highly engaged as they conducted their analysis in small groups.

Vital Signs

Community Support
A most generous gift arrives from Coach Shewchuk!
Mr. Mike Shewchuk is a former OCPS teacher, Hall of Fame track and cross country coach, and two-time Teacher of the Year at Winter Park High School. He donated this customized wall clock art (note the school logo in the center of the time piece) to Acceleration East here at the start of the new school year. He created this art work and has a real talent for other scratch-built specialty items such as jewelry boxes. Thank you so very much Coach Shewchuk for your time, ongoing support, and kindness!

Rigor in the Classroom
Mr. Hall and Khan Academy

Mr. Hall was covering "sentence boundaries" last week with his students using material from the Khan Academy. This lesson will also benefit the students when it comes time for the SAT.

August 2019 Teacher and Staff Person of the Month!
Meet Mr. Soriano and Mr. Quinones

John Sorianno, SAFE Coordinator, and August 2019 Teacher of the Month with his recognition certificate including an entree from the Texas Roadhouse restaurant.

George Quinones, Lead Custodian, and August 2019 Staff Person of the Month with his recognition certificate including an entree from the Texas Roadhouse restaurant.

Mr. Soriano serves as our SAFE Coordinator (Student Assistance and Family Empowerment program) and does a tremendous job helping students overcome daunting challenges. Mr. Soriano works to provide a full range of prevention and intervention services for students and their families here at Acceleration East.

Mr. Quinones works very hard to keep our campus clean, but what he does actually goes beyond that. In keeping our school clean and safe, he also helps to enhance the physical well-being of the students and in doing so, supports our overall mission to see that every student succeeds. And he provides another set of caring eyes looking out for the students' well being and campus safety.
