Hurricane Dorian #16
9/7/2019
6:45 a.m.
Dear Residents, Property Owners and Friends:
As of last evening, Duke Energy was able to restore power to the island. Since then, the Village has been coordinating with Bald Head Island Transportation who received approval from the Coast Guard to operate today, Saturday September 7, 2019, during daylight hours only.
With the progress made by the Emergency Operations support team in clearing road debris and making improvements with the overall safety of the island, and the Damage Assessment Team completing a majority of its assessments, the Village will look to have BHI Transportation resume ferry service starting this morning at 8:00 a.m. Based on the conditions of the island and the minimal damage received by this storm, a phased re-entry process will not be necessary. The last passenger ferry will be leaving tonight at 7:30 p.m. If you are planning to leave the island do not wait until the last ferry.
Please note that an initial 7:00 a.m. ferry departure from Deep Point Marina will be for EOC personnel ONLY to return to the island first thing this morning to continue with general cleanup of the island. Please be mindful of these folks as you travel on the island.
State of Emergency and Mandatory Evacuation Amended
The Mayor will rescind the State of Emergency (including the "voluntary" evacuation order and any curfew) to coincide with the resumption of ferry service at 8:00 a.m. today.
The marinas at both Deep Point and Bald Head Island will be open to private and commercial vessels.
Village EOC
The Village EOC will no longer be active when the State of Emergency is lifted.
It is expected that this will be the last communication regarding the Village's response to Hurricane Dorian for this weekend. If you have any questions or concerns regarding this event, please feel free to contact me at the email or phone number below. Normal business operations will resume on Monday, September, 9, 2019 for the Village Hall and Post Office/Island Package Center.
