Federal Prosecutor to Speak
at MAFP Opioid Seminar
Meynardie
Assistant U.S. Attorney John Meynardie of Gulfport will headline the MAFP's Fall Intensive: Informed Opioid Prescribing, scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 2, 8:30 am to 3 pm, at the Westin Jackson.

The 1-day seminar will feature 6 hours of controlled substance education to give physicians the education they need every 2 years to keep their DEA certificate.

Meynardie, the keynote speaker, has 24 years of experience prosecuting drug cases at the U.S. Attorney's office in both Jackson and Gulfport. He will discuss trends in illegal drug use, plus opiates, spice, bath salts, and synthetic drugs.

Other topics include: Management of Osteoarthritis and Back Pain, Documentation for Opioid Prescribing, and Pain Management and Opioids: Balancing Risks and Benefits. Registration is open now.
Drs. John Brahan of Hattiesburg, Carlos Latorre of Vicksburg, Bill Grantham of Clinton, Catherine Brett of DOM, James Griffin of New Augusta and Drew Snyder.
Academy Leadership Meets with Division of Medicaid Director
MAFP President Dr. Bill Grantham, President-Elect Dr. James Griffin, and Vice President Dr. Carlos Latorre met August 20 with Mississippi Division of Medicaid (DOM) Director Drew Snyder to discuss ways the groups can work together to ease burdens on family physicians who treat Medicaid patients. Also taking part in the meeting was Executive Director Beth Embry, Dr. Catherine Brett of the DOM, and Dr. John Brahan of Hattiesburg.

The meeting was part of MAFP's scheduled quarterly meetings with Snyder. The next scheduled meeting is November 14. Contact Beth Embry if you have any issues or solutions you would like to see discussed at the next meeting.
Join the Network to Help Provide Opioid Training and Education
Do you need assistance or consultation in opioid-related matters? The Opioid Response Network (ORN) can help.

ORN lends physicians technical assistance with prevention, treatment and recovery for opioid-use disorders. Created by the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry in cooperation with AAFP and other organizations, it provides local training and education FREE OF CHARGE for specific needs at a community level. When someone seeks assistance, ORN matches them up with the professionals who can help.

Each treatment consultant is a physician with two years' experience treating opioid use disorders with medication.   Currently, only one family physician from Mississippi is signed up as a treatment expert -- more are needed. More information available here.

MSDH: 215 Severe Pulmonary Disease Cases Related to Vaping
The Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH) is partnering with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other states in alerting the public to severe lung disease associated with the use of e-cigarette products.

While there have been no cases reported in Mississippi, nationwide there have been 215 possible cases and one death reported - all reporting vaping or use of e-cigarette products before their illness. Many of the cases have reported vaping cannabis products, such as tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) or CBD oils, although no single e-cigarette product or device has been consistently identified in all cases.

The symptoms of severe pulmonary disease seen in these cases include cough, shortness of breath, chest pain, nausea or vomiting, diarrhea, fever, and fatigue. Symptoms develop gradually over days to weeks.

"Vaping among youth and young adults is an increasingly common problem in the United States and in Mississippi," said MSDH State Epidemiologist Dr. Paul Byers. "E-cigarettes contain many harmful and potentially harmful substances, including nicotine, and carry significant health risks."
QI Project for Alcohol Screening
The AAFP encourages members, especially those serving a significant number of women of childbearing age, to apply for the Alcohol Screening and Brief Intervention (SBI) Office Champions Project. The project, which will accept up to 25 family medicine practices, aims to increase the use of alcohol SBI within primary care settings, utilizing the office champions model. Applications are due Friday, September 20, 2019.

Physicians who complete this quality improvement project also will receive Part IV maintenance of certification credit.
