"Subversion: A Poetry Reading"
Jennifer MacKenzie, Bruce MacKenzie, and Katy Miller
W. H. Auden wrote, "Poetry makes nothing happen" - but is that true? Can't we all think of at least one poem that has shaped people's minds and actions? And what does that statement mean, anyway? Perhaps it's saying that in a poem, a "nothing" - insignificant or unrecognized, unexpressed - can "happen!" This reading is our tribute to all the ways poetry subverts the status quoFeatured musicians: RFF Recorder Ensemble.

Sharing the Offering
In July, we will share our offering with the St. Louis Area Diaper Bank. The Diaper Bank collects and distributes diapers to ten service organizations and food pantries that in turn distribute them to low-income families in the St. Louis region. Diapers are a basic need for every young child and cost families about $1000 per child each year. There is NO public assistance to cover this cost. Low-income families often must choose between food, utilities, rent and diapers. Children can end up with urinary and skin problems in families that cannot afford frequent diaper changing. They may also miss out on early childhood education programs. The Diaper Bank delivers 100,000 diapers every month to its service partners.

Sanctuary Church Update
Sanctuary Church efforts are ongoing. If you would like to volunteer or have questions, please contact [email protected].

Join the Flower Team!
The Flower Team delivers and displays one floral arrangement (cut, live, or artificial) for each Sunday worship service. The flowers help beautify the Sanctuary, and the team members get to offer their talents in floral design.

Flower arrangements can also be a way to celebrate a life, milestone, anniversary or remembrance of a person or event.

If you are interested in joining the team or would like to provide flowers for a Sunday, please contact Carolyn Burke at  [email protected].

Wipe out wicked weeds in Fillmore Park!
Lend a hand in community service as we help to maintain this recently rebuilt and replanted pocket park at 410 S. Fillmore, about half a mile south of Eliot in a multi-racial neighborhood. Eliot folks work together for an hour before the day's major heat - weeding, deadheading if needed, and doing a "once over" for usually minimal trash. The last July date is tomorrow, Saturday, July 21. August dates are Thursday, August 2, Saturday, August 11, and Thursday, August 23. Meet in the shelter at 9:00 am. Sign up on the Adams Hall bulletin board, at the Social Justice table or by emailing Claire at [email protected].

WE CAN Vigil in Kirkwood
Join our WE CAN friends in vigil in front of Kirkwood City Hall on Saturday, July 21 at 11:30 am. The group stands vigil in Kirkwood on the third Saturday of every month and then meets at Eliot for a brown-bag lunch and brief meeting. This is a good opportunity to support and get to know some of our social justice partners.

Are You Ready for Eliot Membership?
We invite you to come to the Triplett Room after the service at 11:00 am on Sunday. You will hear more about membership from Rev. Jim Crawford and get your questions answered. There will also be an opportunity to sign the membership book. If you need help finding the Triplett Room, stop by the Guest Center off Adams Hall and they will point you in the right direction.

On Thursday, July 26 at 6:30 pm, please join us for an amazing night of awareness and discussion at Eliot Chapel. After viewing the Jason Pollock film "Stranger Fruit" for an unraveling of what took place that day, we will discuss how we can continue to heal as a community and transform our pain into power. This evening, hosted by Missouri Faith Voices, Faith in Action St. Louis, and Eliot Chapel, is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be provided. Please sign up online.

St. Louis County Reform Coalition Presents
St. Louis County Prosecutor
Candidate Forum
Saturday, July 28
6:00 - 8:00 pm
The Sanctuary of Eliot Unitarian Chapel
Free and open to the public

Two candidates who will face off in the Democratic primary on August 7Bob McCulloch and Wesley Bell, have been invited to participate in this event. There is no Republican running so this event will be THE opportunity for public debate about the issues pertaining to the role of the county prosecutor.

Prosecuting attorneys are some of the most powerful elected officials in our community as they decide whether someone will be charged with a crime, which crimes to pursue in court, and who gets a second chance through diversion or treatment programs. The St. Louis County prosecuting attorney's job is to seek justice in criminal cases, work to prevent crime, and serve as a leader in the diverse community they represent.

The St. Louis County Reform Coalition is composed of the following members:
  • American Civil Liberties Union of Missouri
  • Missourians for Alternatives to the Death Penalty
  • Organization for Black Struggle

  • Missouri Faith Voices
  • Missouri NAACP
  • Coalition Against Police Crimes and Repression
  • Black Lives Matter
