September 12 Board Meeting Highlights

SMUHSD's Board of Trustees invites you to its Thursday, September 12, 2019 regular meeting.
The meeting highlights include presentations on the following topics of community interest:
- Review and Approve Schematic Design Drawings, Budget and Schedule for Mills and Capuchino High Schools Athletic Complexes and Authorize Carducci to Proceed with the Design Development Phase
- Summer School Update
- Equity Vision Review and District Work
The meeting will take place at 7 p.m. at the San Mateo Union High School District Office, 650 N. Delaware Street, San Mateo.

SMUHSD Students Graduate from Internship Program
Congratulations to the San Mateo Union High School District students who graduated from the SFO Internship Program this Summer.
On Friday, August 16 SMUHSD staff members including Career Coordinators Nancy Kane, Carrie Hermann, Kelly McLoughlin, and Helen O'Brien, as well as SMHS CTE Department Chair Michele Casale and SMHS Assistant Principal Mike Holtz attended the SFO Internship graduation ceremony.
This summer SFO admitted its largest intern class to date - over 350 interns!
Students who participated in the program gained valuable work experience and career exposure at the airport. Interns usually provide office support or customer service.
Additionally, the District received a Certificate of Recognition for its partnership with SFO in preparing local youth for careers in aviation, hospitality and tourism.

San Mateo Adult School Celebrates Program Graduates
Students in the Professional Communications program of San Mateo Adult School's Career and Adult Education Program recently received certification in Professional Communications by Southwest Airlines.
The Professional Communications program
provides the essential communication skills you need to thrive in any workplace environment and become a confident leader. Course learning outcomes include a solid understanding of decision making, workplace etiquette, and business ethics.
This interactive course prepares you to thrive in any workplace by developing your skills to:
- Identify styles of communication and the purpose/importance of each
- Understand decision-making and how this can affect your career
- Explore goal setting and how establishing and achieving goals can positively impact your career
Students who successfully complete the program and pass the final exam receive a certification in Professional Communications by Southwest Airlines.

San Mateo High School Athlete Finalist for Award
Kalyn represents the San Francisco Bay Area Chapter of PCA.
Finalists are chosen based on their ability to make themselves, their team and their sport better by their behavior in and out of the sport!

Hillsdale Football Player Named Athlete of the Week
Congratulations to Hillsdale High School's Nathan Iskander, he was recently named the San Mateo Daily Journal Athlete of the Week.
Nathan scored three touchdowns in last Friday's game against Independence High School.

Scholarships Offered for SAT Prep Class - Deadline to Apply is This Wednesday, September 11!
Does your child need help preparing for the SAT?
The Foster City Lions Club is offering 35 scholarships for first-generation college bound students and those with limited financial resources to attend a prep course at no cost to SMUHSD students who qualify!
All books and materials will be provided.
Course begins September 14 and ends October 31.
The SAT Prep Class is through

Congresswoman Jackie Speier Visits Aragon High School
It was standing room only for Congresswoman Jackie Speier's August 26 visit to Aragon High School. More than 80 AHS juniors and seniors were in attendance.
Two of her former interns introduced Congresswoman Speier, where she addressed questions from the crowd that touched on climate change, women's rights, gun control, immigration and more.

Adelante Conference is Saturday, September 28 Keynote Speaker Announced
The SMUHSD Family Engagement Coordinators invite families to attend a free conference on September 28 from 8 a.m. - 1 p.m. at San Mateo High School. This event is open to all SMUHSD families and students. Breakfast and lunch will be served.
Conference keynote speaker is Dr. Francisco Reveles, a national and international motivational speaker and a dynamic leadership trainer for students, parents, and educators.
Dr. Reyes is the Superintendent of the Yuba County Office of Education.
Workshops, presented in multiple languages, include:
- Achieving Success and Balance in the Modern Day
- Understanding College and Financial Aid System
- Understanding the United States school systems
- More topics to be announced

Angst Movie Screening and Speaker Panel is October 10
The Angst project is an IndieFlix Original documentary designed to raise awareness around anxiety, with an emphasis on youth and families. The film includes interviews with kids, teens, experts, and parents. The goal is to help people identify and understand the symptoms of anxiety and encourage them to reach out for help. The film and corresponding materials provide tools, resources, and hope.
A guided panel discussion will immediately follow the film.

Save the Date - Districtwide College Fair is October 17
More than 100 colleges and organizations will be represented at the annual Districtwide College and Career Fair on Thursday, October 17.
The fair will be held at Burlingame High School from 6:30 - 8 p.m. and is open to all students and families in the San Mateo Union High School District.

The college admissions process can be a source of stress and anxiety for students and parents alike.
Attend this workshop and l
earn practical strategies to help reduce unnecessary pressure around the college admissions process and ways to support their student's overall well-being and readiness for life in college and beyond.

This program is presented by the San Mateo Union High School District in partnership with Stanford University's Challenge Success program and the GATE Parents Group.

Fall College Essay Strategies - Registration Closes Today - September 9!
This GATE Parents Group-sponsored class focuses the development of quality essay and personal statement drafts for the UC and Common Application Essay prompts. HS seniors will have enrollment priority but interested juniors will be placed on a waiting list and admitted if space is available. Classes are also open to non-SMUHSD students.
Orientation and small group sessions
Location: Aragon High School
Orientation: Tuesday, September 10, 6-8 p.m.
Two Small Group Sessions: Tuesdays, September 17 and 24; 6-7 p.m. or 7-8 p.m.
Two private follow up sessions with instructor
Location: Burlingame Public Library
45 minutes each (over course of Fall, variety of times to choose from)
SAT Prep Classes - Registration Closes September 14!
The GATE Parents Group sponsors SAT and ACT Preparation Classes several times a year, taught by SMUHSD teachers, appropriate for sophomores, juniors and seniors. They focus on test taking strategies and how the students can prepare themselves for the rigors of standardized testing. Classes are also open to non-SMUHSD students.
Registration for the SAT class targeting the November 2, 2019 SAT test:
Classes at San Mateo High, Saturdays: September 21, 28, October 12, (skip 10/5), October 19, and October 26.
Register for Morning Sessions (8:30 a.m. - noon) OR Afternoon Sessions (1 - 4:30 p.m.)
Registration closes September 14.
Important: Students are responsible for registration to take the actual tests.

Volunteer Opportunities for High School Students from the City of San Mateo
Bayfront Cleanup: Saturday, September 21
Volunteer with friends and family for City of San Mateo's annual Bayfront CleanUp at Ryder Park on Saturday, September 21.
Registration starts at 7:30 a.m. and cleanup runs through noon, followed by a "Thank You Volunteers BBQ" and "Catch of the Day" contest. School Service Learning hours available.

City of San Mateo Celebrates 125th Anniversary with "September Nights on B Street"
Remaining events are September 12 and September 19
The City of San Mateo is turning 125 years old! Join in commemorating San Mateo's quasquicentennial with pop-up dining, drinks and dancing in downtown.
There will be free live music, dance lessons and entertainment for the whole family during
September Nights on B Street - the City's newest downtown event series Thursday evenings from 5-8 p.m. on September 12 and 19.
Grab take-out from a
local restaurant and join outdoor pop-up dining on B Street between Second and Third avenues. The street will be transformed into an outdoor dining pavilion featuring tables and chairs beneath the twinkle lights. Beer and wine will be available for purchase on site.

Burlingame Pet Parade is Saturday, September 28

Dusty, the Klepto Kitty
|
The 16th annual Burlingame Pet Parade kicks off at 10 a.m. on Broadway in Burlingame with Dusty the Klepto Kitty as Grand Marshal.
Pet owners and their pets who wish to march in the parade must report by 9:30 a.m. to the parking lot at Broadway and Chula Vista.
Immediately following the parade, judges will select the Best School Float and award $500 and $250 to the first- and second-place winning schools (which must be in San Mateo County), as well as ribbons to winners of the Best Pet Trick; Most Unusual Pet; Best Dressed Pet; and Most Original Float, Group or Wagon (non-school category).
There is no charge to participate. Free entertainment and art projects for kids.
