2018 Louisiana Board of Regents Campus Safety Conference
A group of over 200 higher education stakeholders convened at Pennington Biomedical Research Center yesterday for the Board of Regents' inaugural Campus Safety Conference.
Following an opening by Commissioner Joseph C. Rallo and a welcome from Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards, several national experts presented their experiences and shared best practices.
The workshop was a natural outgrowth of the Board of Regents' efforts to coordinate active shooter response, sexual violence prevention, hazing elimination and other issues of common relevance to institutions. Recognizing there are issues that are direct threats to safe campuses, not only in Louisiana but across the nation, Regents planned the conference with the goal to increase dialog around those complex and loaded topics.

Collis Temple, III of Baton Rouge, is a National Sales Director and agency owner with Primerica, an international financial services marketing organization.
Prior to joining Primerica and pursuing his own dreams of business ownership, Collis was a student-athlete playing basketball at LSU. While at LSU he earned an Undergraduate Degree in General Business in three years, then completed a Masters in Sports Management, before beginning the pursuit of his Doctorate in Educational Leadership. According to LSU's Sports Information Department, Collis is believed to be the first Division I student athlete to complete an undergraduate degree, Master's degree, and began the pursuit of a Doctorate while still eligible to play athletics.
Mr. Temple serves as the representative of the 6th
Congressional District, and his term expires on December 31, 2020.

BoRSF 2017-18 Endowment Competitions

The Board of Regents Support Fund's 2017-18 endowments competitions are ongoing, with proposals received on February 1 across three subprograms. The Board has received an extremely large number of match requests, including 11 in Endowed Chairs, 24 in Two-Year Workforce Scholarships, and 54 in Superior Graduate Student Scholarships. Requests total $12.26 million, approximately four times the $3.17 million projected in the FY 2017-18 Plan and Budget to be available for these initiatives; graduate student scholarships are in highest demand, with approximately $4.5 million - five times - more requested than matching funds estimated to be available. Out-of-state reviewers have been selected and will be evaluating proposals during February and March. External funding recommendations will be released to the campuses in early April and brought to the Board of Regents for consideration on April 25.

As part of the Board of Regents Affordable Learning Louisiana plan, LOUIS: The Louisiana Library Network and CARLI (Consortium of Academic and Research Libraries in Illinois) have joined together to bring an exciting webinar on open educational resources (OER) to you during Open Education Week 2018. Join the two consortia for a panel presentation on the faculty perspective on Open Educational Resources on Tuesday, March 6th from 11:00 am to noon.
The webinar will feature special guest speaker Lisa Petrides from the Institute for the Study of Knowledge Management in Education (ISKME) as the moderator. The panelists include Esteban D. Araya (Western Illinois University), Kelly Black (College of Lake County), Francesca Mellieon-Williams (Southern University), and Mollye Russel (Baton Rouge Community College).
This webinar is perfect for administrators, faculty, and staff interested in learning more about how open education resources can be incorporated into their courses.
Discussion points for the panelists include:
- What prompted your shift from traditional course materials to open resources/open textbook?
- What has that process entailed? Is it ongoing?
- What has been the reaction of your students thus far?
- Has your school/department provided any type of incentives for you to make this shift to OER? Disincentives?
- Do you feel that using open resources has any specific impact on your career, such as improvement in teaching practice, being able to use any part of this experience towards tenure and promotion, etc.?

The Council of Student Body Presidents Takes Action
T
he Council of Student Body Presidents (COSBP) met with Governor John Bel Edwards at the Louisiana Governor's Mansion Thursday, February 8, 2018, to discuss issues that directly impact higher education and their respective campuses. The students' concerns regarding higher education funding, TOPS, federal policies, and even faculty and staff wage increases at their institutions, were addressed by Governor Edwards. Following the meeting, the Council of Student Body Presidents issued a resolution to address the State's higher education budget issues. A copy of that resolution can be accessed here:
