Welcome B.C.T. Class 18-02
|
|
On August 9, 2018, 50 Correctional Officers were welcomed into the District of Columbia Department of Corrections. B.C.T. Class 18-02 is one of the largest and most diverse classes to be sworn into service in recent years. The historic ceremony was held at the Center for Professional Development and Learning (CPDL) and special remarks were delivered by Director Quincy L. Booth, Warden Lennard K. Johnson, Deputy Director Amy Lopez, and the exceptional CPDL team. Paul Taylor, Thinking for a Change Instructor, served as the keynote speaker.
The Pinning of the Badges and Oath of Office were administered by Warden Johnson before special awards presentations were made by Training Specialists, Sharon Hargrove and Nicole Wallace.
"Today is not the end of our session but the beginning of our legacy,"
class speaker, Felicia Hammond said. "
I challenge my fellow graduates to stay committed and to go into the facility and set a new bar for not only the recruits that come after us but to the existing officers as well. We are the change, so let's be that."
Congratulations and best wishes, B.C.T. Class 18-02!

The Free Minds Book Club hosted an Author Talk with Jason Reynolds for juvenile inmates. Mr. Reynolds, a native Washingtonian, read his first book cover to cover at the age of 17 and he shared how that experience, paired with a move to Brooklyn, NY, propelled his writing career.
Today, Mr. Reynolds is a New York Times bestselling author with 12 novels. Mr. Reynolds specializes in writing literature for young adults and some of his most recognized works include
Long Way Down
and
When I was the Greatest
. Mr. Reynolds encouraged the program participants to start working on their own creative projects.
"The most expensive and valuable thing you own is your story," Mr. Reynolds said.

Becoming Free
- Film Screening & Discussion
|
|
The District of Columbia Department of Corrections offered a screening of
Becoming Free,
a documentary by a local film maker Kristin Adair. The film follows three returning citizens who were incarcerated as youth and have transitioned to adulthood and back to the DC community. The film highlights their journey as aspiring business owners who are seeking to break the cycle of poverty, violence and incarceration.
DC DOC inmates attended the film screening film then participated in a lively discussion with Ms. Adair, Will Avila, founder and CEO of Clean Decisions and co-founder of Changing Perceptions and one of the entrepreneurs spotlighted in the film, and community members that actively supported the returning citizens along their journey.
Howard University students also attended the screening in commemoration of HU
Day of Service 2018
, an annual initiative that encourages students to participate in community service projects throughout the District of Columbia and nationwide.
