Today's Shab Sha! is a rather long one; your message may be "clipped". If you see something like this

Beginning this Shabbat we will be introducing our new Shabbat and Holiday prayer book, Siddur Lev Shalem. In format, it is identical to our newish High Holiday Mahzor, also called Lev Shalem (Hebrew for Wholeharted).

It's most fitting that we begin using it this Shabbat, when Regina Friedman is sponsoring the kiddush in memory of her beloved husband, Sidney Friedman. Sidney's yahrzeit is today. Regina provided the seed money for the initial purchase of our new siddur, and we are very grateful to her.

If you would like to dedicate one or more volumes of this siddur to the Congregation-perhaps in memory of someone or in honor of someone or recognizing a special occasion, please call the Shul office. The cost is $54 per volume.

Torah Rea ding 941          Haftarah 968
MATTOT - MAS'EI

Our double Torah portion begins with rules regarding the binding nature of - and the nullification of - vows, particularly those made by women.

The Israelites successfully defeat and slay the Midianites, including the five kings of the region and Balaam, the sorcerer. Nevertheless, the warriors are chastised by Moses for sparing the Midianite women with whom the Israelites had recently engaged in idolatry and promiscuity. The army is sent out again to complete the mission. The spoils of war are divided.
The tribes of Reuben and Gad and half of Menasseh possessed large herds and were desirous of settling on the conquered lands on the eastern side of the Jordan River. Permission is granted to them - provided they participate in the efforts to wrest the territory on the western side of the Jordan from the Canaanites. They agree and take a vow to this effect.
The various locales in which the Israelites encamped from the time of the Exodus until their arrival at the plains of Moab are enumerated.

Following an admonition to root out idolatry in Canaan upon its conquest, the land is divided by lot under the supervision of Joshua, Elazar and the leaders of the ten tribes whose peoples will occupy the territory west of the Jordan River.
Six Cities of Refuge are established - three on each side of the Jordan. These cities are to be given to the Levites and will serve as a place of sanctuary for anyone who has committed murder accidentally. Vengeful relatives of the deceased may not pursue these individuals into the Cities of Refuge.

One additional refinement is made to the laws of inheritance in order to maintain the tribal integrity of real property; in cases where daughters inherit their fathers' property, the heiresses may not marry men from other tribes.

Tonight at 7:00 p.m.

Good Things Are Starting to Happen!
I can't figure out exactly what the reason is behind stalled legislation moving forward in the Israeli Knesset. If I had to guess, perhaps Bibi has a sense that he's going to be indicted, and he wants to do the right thing with respect to the liberal movements in Israel and the draft laws which have exempted the Hareidim. Read on - and be amazed!...
Jerusalem's Chief Rabbi Amar, says it is forbidden to hold mixed prayer anywhere along the length of the Western Wall.
Stern finds a pre-State picture to prove him wrong:

Today is Rosh Hodesh, the start of the new month of Av, and the women of the Wall were there this morning. They are usually subjected to all sorts of harassment, but this new iteration may be a sign that Bibi will finally live up to his promises:

And it looks like Bibi may have also thrown a bone to the right-wingers in his coalition:

Interesting Things Happening in Israel

There has been at least one movie made about every Eli Cohen, I understand that another one is in the works... I heard about Eli Cohen the very first time that I went on a tour of the Golan Heights. He had gained the trust of many in the upper echelons of Syrian social and military circles, and on a tour of their emplacements on the Golan with the Syrian general, he learned of how Syrian troops were suffering in the tremendous heat. Cohen suggested that the Syrians plant eucalyptus trees around all their concrete bunkers to shade them. When war came several years after Eli Cohen had been executed by the Syrian regime, the information he passed along to Israel allowed the Israelis to knock out one bunker after another by targeting the tall eucalyptus tree outcroppings.

PLACING MEMORY
By Gal Cohen and Zac Hacmon Curated by Wai Ying Zhao
June 29 - July 28
The exhibition 'Placing Memory' showcases the relations bounded by architecture and collective memory through the collaboration between two Israeli born artists, Zac Hacmon and Gal Cohen. The artists link between demolished architecture in Israel due to gentrification processes, to institutional architecture in New York. The ongoing dialog between the two artists takes a site specific shift and develops to new levels of visual and conceptual conversation.

T HE CAKEMAKER

After highly successful festival runs, including Karlovy Vary and The New York Jewish Film Festival, The CAKEMAKER, a complex mix of "national identity, sexuality, and, of course, food", will be screened in theaters commencing Friday .

July 14 - 17
North Carolina Museum of Art
Raleigh, North Carolina
Israeli born dancer and choreographer Dana Ruttenberg presents Naba 2.0. Ruttenberg seeks to create works that engage all the senses, not excluding the sense of humor, and to expand the existing audiences for dance. To that aim, she collaborates with artists from different fields (theater, film, music, and visual art) and examines new angles for the presentation and experience of dance. Naba 2.0 invites audiences, through the use of audio guides, to choose their own soundtrack for the work which roams the galleries reacting to the presented artwork.

FOOTPRINTS

Reynolds Industries Theater
Durham, North Carolina
Footprints delivers an outstanding presentation of three ADF-commissioned world premieres, performed with impeccable technique and infectious energy by ADF students. Choreographer Dafi Altabeb's work is tender, delicate, yet powerful. Her pieces project youth, courage, imagination, contradictions, and above all, honesty. Choreographer Abby Zbikowski, whose newly commissioned work with Dayton Contemporary Dance Company opened the ADF season, produces hyper physical dances. Jillian Peña's work seeks to make visible the confusion and desire of the self in relationship to itself and others.
