SLEEP!
By: Adrianne Finley Odell
Just a couple of weeks after graduation, I was talking with my husband, Rich, and sharing with him how optimistic I was feeling. I just felt that everything was going so well in all areas of my life and was expressing gratitude for that. Of course Rich, in his very loving way, asked me, “I am just curious— you didn’t feel quite this way a couple of weeks ago— what’s changed?” I paused, thought, and honestly wasn’t quite sure what had changed (but I knew he was already thinking of the answer). “Do you think that getting more sleep might be playing a role in this?” Sheepishly, I acknowledged— “probably… yes, I suppose it does.” I really wish I were one of those people that didn’t need as much sleep as I do, but I am pretty average in that respect. I function best when I get at least 7 – 8 hours of sleep a night, and I definitely was not getting that.

Apparently, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM), agrees that most adults need between 7 – 8 hours of sleep each night. And in partnership with the American Academy of Pediatrics they recommend 10 – 13 hours (including naps) for children ages 3 – 5, 9 – 12 hours for children between 9 – 12 years old, and 8 – 10 hours for teens.*

As Roycemore was gearing up for summer break, I checked in with a number of students to ask what they were looking forward to for the summer. Not surprisingly, many of them said— SLEEP! Of course a number of other activities made the list, but our students recognize how much they appreciate sleep and feel better when they get enough of it.

So now that we are beginning a new school year, how can we help our students help themselves? First, it begins with modeling. Last week, I shared my story with faculty during our in-service and asked them to hold me accountable as well as hold each other accountable. I am sure that when I don’t get enough sleep I am not my best. In fact according to AASM, our brains change and lack of sleep can make us more irritable or depressed, have difficulty making good decisions, and affect our ability to learn. Not good traits for a Head of School, and not much fun to be around!

Second, you can help your children by talking with them about the research. For older students, you can even share the link with them below and then have a conversation about how you can work together to establish healthier routines. For younger children, you can set up positive bedtime routines to begin to downshift toward bedtime. This can begin by limiting electronics— be it computers, TV, or phones- at least one hour before bedtime.

Third, and while on the topic of electronics, set up a charging station in your living room or somewhere other than your child’s bedroom and make sure phones, computers, ipads and other electronic devices stay out of bedrooms. These electronic devices emit light and often make noise which are disruptive to sleep.

Finally, monitor your child’s tiredness and adjust as needed. Be aware of how changes in routine affect them emotionally— positive or negative— and ask questions like Rich asked of me. Bringing that self-awareness to the forefront so your children can make positive decisions around their health and well-being will set them up for a lifetime of good health.

Our Back-to-School RFA Griffin Gathering
Our Back-to-School RFA Griffin Gathering was a blast! What a fun way to welcome back our returning Griffins and meet and mingle with our brand new students and their families! School of Rock’s house band rocked the house while we indulged in some delicious treats from Gotta B Crepes. Everyone had fun connecting with old friends and new, especially the Griffin! Many thanks to everyone who was able to join us to start the school year with this fun Roycemore community event!

Student Exchange Opportunity— Guatemala Faces & Culture Program
—meeting in the Roycemore School lobby this Friday, Aug. 31 at 8:30 a.m.
We are happy to share with you that this year we will welcome Guatemalan students through the Faces and Our Cultures Program. They will spend 7.5 weeks (October 16th - December 9th) living with a host family while attending classes and participating in extracurricular activities at school. The program leads to wonderful friendships and provides our students and our Guatemalan guests with valuable cultural experiences. These young participants apply to be Cultural Ambassadors of their country and are carefully selected. They go through a year long preparation process and prepare cultural projects that they will share with our community.
Here is a VIDEO of the program, which will give you a very insightful idea of how the program works.
We are looking for families to host them! Everyone is welcome to participate!
If you would like additional information or are interested in hosting a student and participate in this life-enriching experience, you can contact Adrianne Finley Odell, or contact Gaby Padilla, State Coordinator.
