Foundation launches new mini-grant program
The Momentum Fund is now open. This new initiative will advance age-friendly and dementia-friendly work in Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Rhode Island. Grants of up to $10,000 will support early-stage initiatives and innovative efforts; $100,000 has been allocated for each state.

"Communities often find it challenging to secure resources to support emerging work. We created the Momentum Fund to address this gap," said Phillip González, senior program officer at the Foundation.

Nora Moreno Cargie, Foundation president and vice president for corporate citizenship at Tufts Health Plan, added, "By fostering new ideas, Tufts Health Plan Foundation hopes to advance the movement to make communities stronger and more livable for all generations."

As the only regional funder focused exclusively on healthy aging, the Foundation invests in local and regional work to support communities in becoming great places to grow up and grow old.

Momentum Fund resources will be available to nonprofit organizations in Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Rhode Island. The Foundation has convened local committees in each state to inform decision making, review proposals and make recommendations for funding.

Staff changes

Caite O'Brien, our community investor, is leaving the Foundation to pursue a doctorate in occupational therapy at the MGH Institute of Health Professions. This is bittersweet news. While we are sad to see her go, we are excited to see her follow her passion to work with older people. Her last day will be June 1.

Caite has been a critical thought partner in our work and an integral link for the Foundation to communities and organizations with whom we engage. Phillip Gonz ález will be the primary point of contact for questions related to letters of intent, proposals and grantmaking until we hire a new community investor.

The program offers support for communities working to implement identified best practices. Funding and technical assistance are available to promote improvements in cities and towns.

The age- and dementia-friendly options
are the first best practices related to health and human services. Other options for communities range from financial planning to citizen engagement to water resource management.

The Age-Friendly Berkshires Action Plan was developed with participation from all 32 Berkshire County municipalities, including civic leaders, community organizations and older people. This unique regional approach has been a model for rural communities here and in other states. The Foundation has funded Age-Friendly Berkshires since 2015.
