SCIENCE TECHNOLOGY ENGINEERING & MATH
COVID couldn’t stop our alumni from leading young people. Ammon Johnson and Machi Cross stepped up and held virtual STEM sessions getting down to the nuts and bolts of robotics!

A&B also facilitated a STEM math program for 75 middle school students at Denver Discover School early in the year. Unfortunately, this program was cut short due to school closures due to the pandemic.
ClubZ! provides students from elementary school to college with individualized tutoring in several areas of study including math, English, and science. In 2020, ClubZ! gained 4 additional tutors bringing our total number of tutors to 14. ClubZ’s tutors taught a total of 109 hours to 9 clients in 2020. When COVID-19 hit in early 2020, all in-person tutoring was stopped for the safety of our tutors. ClubZ! took advantage of technology and quickly added the Zoom platform to allow our tutors access to their students. In the heat of COVID-19 we were able to pay our top four tutors a
relief checks to oset their lack in tutoring hours.

Additionally, A&B has a partnership with WORKNOW that provides adults in various industries to gain refresher math skills for their career development. Before the virus ClubZ! provided both in-person group math tutoring as well as individualized tutoring for those in the electrical and home builder industry. Due to the virus, those monthly classes were halted or reduced dramatically.

In 2020, ClubZ! Tutoring provided the following in partnership with WORKNOW 190 group and 91.25 individual tutoring hours:

WORKNOW sponsored CHA (Colorado Homebuilders Association) with group math tutoring. Reaching 41 professionals.

WORKNOW sponsored DJEATC (Electricians) with group math tutoring and classes on skills to reduce test-taking anxiety. 131 professionals gained assistance from our tutors.

Cross Purpose provides adults with tutoring for those who are re-entering the workforce. Over 75 clients gained assistance from our tutors.

WORKNOW sponsored CITC (Construction Industry Training Council of Colorado) with group math tutoring.
My son started with Athletics & Beyond at the beginning of this year. His experience from the very beginning has been nothing but positive. With the way things are in society today, it is so important for young men, especially young men of color, to have positive role models and positive outlets. This organization goes above and beyond in making sure that these kids are taken care of. My son has always had a passion for football since he was literally an infant. I have never known an infant to sit quietly in front of a TV while a football game is on with their eyes never moving from the screen, but that was my son. My son has never been a bad student, but he did have some struggles. Athletics and Beyond and their amazing staff/volunteers changed that around. They showed him opportunities he had never had before, like traveling for football, giving back to the community, and how important it was to not just be an athlete but be a student first. They have provided tutoring for him so he can be the best academic version of himself that he can be. My son is now sitting at a 3.2 GPA and working hard to bring that up even higher. From the very first interaction I had with Coach Narcy I could tell the passion and commitment he has in building up young boys into young men. The organization as a whole has made a huge impact in not only my son’s life but mine. Being a single mom of 3 and working endless hours I can use all the extra help I can get. They are consistently involved with my son and communicate with me on a regular basis. I am proud and blessed that they allowed us into their family”!!- Michelle Cobalis

This year we partnered with Mile High Sports Radio and created the first A&B Student-Athlete Show. The show aired every Tuesday at 1340 AM. This was an opportunity to highlight our program, its participants, and the organizations that support it. In doing so we also introduced conversations that were relevant to the youth sports community. We were also able to promote local businesses’ in and around the Denver area. In 2021 we will build upon this platform with podcast and video features that continue to bring thought-provoking conversations to the youth sports community.
The COVID-19 pandemic presented a new set of challenges for our student-athletes. With remote learning becoming the new mode of education, the challenge of internet access became very real.

Fortunately, T Mobile provided 30 hotspots and Colorado Library Consortium (CLiC) provided 23 hotspots to help combat the digital divide and help keep students connected. This is just one example of the many valued community partners that helped A&B serve in 2020!

The Latino Community Foundation helped A&B provide laptops and CDOT Tele-Working funding helped the program transition to the world of providing remote services.
