Our 5th Annual Green Jobs Forum will be held on Thursday, August 16th, from 5:00 - 9:00 pm, at the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments in Washington DC. We are also offering several green career and networking workshops from 8:30 am - 5:00 pm.

Our Panel 1 economic development/workforce speakers from Maryland and Virginia are Dr. Ellie Giles, CEO, WorkSource Montgomery , and Natalie Monkou, Business Development Manager, from the Arlington Economic Development Office. Our Panel 2 speakers will feature Leaders in Energy members who have landed or created a green job.

Working Group Meeting
Join us for our next Circular Economy Working Group on Wednesday, July 25th, 6-7:30 pm.

Meeting Location: Our meeting will take place at the George Washington University from 6-7:30 pm in Room B207 at the District House at George Washington University, 2121 H Street, NW, Washington, DC 20052. This is a LEED-certified building.

On the agenda will be a presentation by Dr. Clifford Deaton, Chairman of the Circular Economy Working Group. He will discuss our last 6 months of work and the future direction of the Working Group, followed by lots of time for discussion.

 The Circular Economy Working Group meets the fourth Wednesday of each month."

5th Annual Green Jobs Forum, 5:00 - 9:00 pm
PLUS Green Career & Networking Workshops, 8:30 am - 5:00 pm 
Leaders in Energy will conduct its 5th annual Green Jobs Forum on August 16, 2018, at the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments. These activities will include Workshops (8:30 am - 5:00 pm) and a Green Jobs Forum (5:00 pm - 9:00 pm).  This event will cover green careers opportunities in the DMV Region and include economic development and workforce development officials from the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia. 

There will also be a panel featuring Leaders in Energy members who have found or created a green job. 

Exhibitors include companies that are hiring and green tech/clean energy educational and career assistance organizations.  Connect with others working in the energy, sustainability, and environmental fields (or who are seeking to transition into these sectors) at one of our most popular events!  

A number of green career and networking workshops are also being offered from 8:30 am - 5:00 pm.
 
  Location:  Kirby Training Room,  Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments 777 North Capitol St NE, Washington, DC 20002. Forum includes program, pizza, and beverages. (Early bird through August 3rd and student/jobseeker rates available).

Meet Our Panel 1 Speakers
DR. ELLIE GILES  serves as the first CEO of WorkSource Montgomery, Inc. (WSM) in Montgomery County, Maryland. WSM is a talent development non-profit connecting employers and job seekers. WSM works with current employers and new employers to support their talent needs. Additionally, WSM creates strong talent pipelines for jobs of the future by establishing career pathways through collaboration with strong and relevant training and community resources. WSM has received a grant for green jobs and is developing a program on solar training and also offers programs related to jobs in sustainability such as stormwater management technicians.

Prior to this position, Dr. Giles was the Director of Operations for Montgomery Business Development Corporation (MBDC), the first public/private economic development agency in Montgomery County. MBDC’s mission is to provide engagement and a platform for the business community in economic development and policy decisions. In this role, Dr. Giles built relationships and implements actions with targeted decision makers to realize a shared vision of economic stability. In 2016, the Daily Record identified Dr. Giles as one of Maryland’s top 100 women.

Dr. Giles is a former teacher and researcher at Johns Hopkins University with an emphasis in developing strategies to enhance educational practices for students. She earned a Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins in Educational Leadership and Administration. She has related educational degrees from Johns Hopkins (Masters) and Florida State University (Bachelors). She is an award-winning international speaker and consultant sharing her passion regarding education reform and advocacy for a strong educational future. She has over 30 years of experience in the field of education and has been recognized as a National Educator of the Year.
NATALIE MONKOU  serves as a business development manager and liaison to the business improvement districts (BIDs) for Arlington Economic Development in Arlington, Virginia. In her business development role, she focuses on national recruitment and attraction of new business to Arlington County with a primary emphasis on energy companies and educational technology, as well as nonprofit organizations. Natalie also manages the business investment team’s innovative initiatives such as the award-winning Startup Arlington and Arlington Real Labs Initiative (known as ARLi).

Before arriving in Arlington, she served as special assistant to the deputy chief administrative officer for economic development and public infrastructure in the Prince George’s County Executive’s Office (Rushern L. Baker, III) and focused on economic development policy and agency management.

Natalie is a graduate and dual degree holder from the University of Maryland, College Park with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English, Language, and Literature and a Master’s in Public Administration.

Green Career Workshop 2.0: What's the Best "Fit" for Your Career Path?

  1. Identify your specific area or areas of specialization as a Green Leader.
  2. Complete activities that guide you in identifying the technical, managerial, and individual leadership competencies – the knowledge, skills, and abilities – that you need to be successful in your area or areas of specialty.
  3. Develop, or further hone, a strategy for moving your career along your chosen career path, based on your career level.
  4. Identify how to assess potential employers on a five-part scale for “fit” with your career path.

Note: This workshop builds on the insights and practices from the Leaders in Energy Green Career Workshop and we encourage you to take this workshop as a prerequisite, although it is not required.
  • Network with fellow Leaders in Energy members who can be a career resource for you
  • Engage in group discussion about the context around your career in the Green Economy
  • Obtain useful resources. (Green Career Workshop: What's Your Green Career Plan includes a workbook with exercises and resources.)
Fear is your Copilot: Networking in Washington DC

Networking. You’ve been told it’s so important to landing that next job, the right internship, or access to in-demand people. But where do you even begin? How can I understand this process? And why does just thinking about a room full of strangers in professional dress make me so nervous?! This session will tackle these questions and more with a balance of theory, strategies, and group participation. Learn how to beat the stress and thrive in these social situations. Feel free to bring your lunch! And business cards!

Peoples Partners & Associates (PP&A) is offering its “Unlocking Blockchain for Energy | Executive Workshop,” which combines a blockchain technology onboarding with energy industry-specific perspectives of how blockchain is impacting the sector today. Our team will elaborate on industry-specific use cases and applications for generators, transmission service organizations, regulators, marketers, and energy service providers. As a result of this executive workshop, participants will have a solid foundational understanding of blockchain technology as well as of how blockchain is being used in the energy industry today. We are pleased to welcome Beth Offenbacker, Ph.D. as our Director of Training and Development.

Beth developed and led the highly successful Green Career Workshop for Leaders In Energy, with sold-out sessions in August 2017 and January 2018. She was the instructor of our recent Green Career Momentum series.

For those participating in our upcoming Green Career Workshops at the August 16th, 2018 Green Jobs Forum, you will have a chance to see her in action and meet her in person!

BETH OFFENBACKER, Ph.D., is the Director of Training and Development for Leaders in Energy. She has more than 25 years of experience in training, coaching, talent development, engagement, community relations, marketing, and project management experience. Beth’s core expertise is in developing and implementing talent management and development programs for emerging, established, and senior-level professionals. Her programs focus on developing the skills and talents green leaders need to make a positive impact in the world, at an individual and team level. Her prior work experience includes various positions with the federal sector, the electric power industry, a professional trade association, and a marketing firm. She also has extensive experience in designing and leading community engagement processes, including for environmental projects (watersheds, stormwater, and sewer).

She earned a bachelor’s degree in communications at the State University of New York at Brockport and a master’s degree in public communications at American University. A graduate of Virginia Tech’s Center for Public Administration and Policy, Beth’s dissertation focused on the practice of public participation in 12 countries (Australia, Brazil, Cambodia, Canada, China, Cote d’Ivoire, Mexico, New Zealand, Scotland, South Africa, Sweden, and the United States). Beth is also the Founder and Principle of Waterford, Inc. Waterford’s mission is to create stronger, more successful companies, nonprofits, and communities.
