Summer Internship Experiences
More than 40 GGUSD students are engaging in a powerful summer internship experience through Orange County United Way’s Youth Career Connections program, which combines work-based learning with career experiences in a wide-range of professional industries. The internship program is a capstone course for incoming seniors enrolled in GGUSD’s high school Career and Technical Education (CTE) Career Pathways.

Students spend a week in the classroom with GGUSD CTE teachers to build communication, collaboration and research skills, work on their resumes, create LinkedIn profiles and hear from industry guest speakers. Two GGUSD teachers team-teach the class and make site visits to monitor students’ progress on the job.

The work-based internship takes place in July and students return to the classroom in August to reflect and present to their classmates about what they learned. At the completion of the of the program, students earn 10 credits and CTE completion certificates.

The internship opportunities cover a wide range of industry sectors including arts, media, and entertainment, engineering and architecture, health services and medical technology, and information and computer technology.
Los Amigos student Katherine Garcia is getting hands-on career experience at Healthy Smiles for Kids and Pacifica High School student Matthew McHenry is exploring his interest in architecture at L3 Architecture during GGUSD’s summer internship program.

Getting Ready for 2018-2019
Staff around GGUSD are hard at work every summer getting our schools prepared for fresh starts each school year. Last week, the maintenance staff at Mark Twain worked to clean and organize the front office, using muscle to move boxes and file cabinets! They're also making sure the campus is cleaned up and ready to go each day for summer school! We were proud to feature them in our Facebook spotlights called #GGUSDSummerSuccess.

Board of Education Summer Study
GGUSD Board of Education members and Superintendent Gabriela Mafi enjoyed an all-day study session July 17 with representatives from the California School Board Association on best practices for school board governance. We are thankful for a school board that is committed to continual improvement and dedicated to student success. We are proud to feature our board members and superintendent in our Facebook spotlights called  #GGUSDSummerSuccess.

Summer Improvement Projects : School may be out for summer but great work is being done at our facilities while the students are away, including updates and improvements to the gymnasium at Rancho Alamitos High School. A new floor has been installed and will be followed by installation of brand new bleachers. Completion of the project is scheduled in time for the start of the new school year. Stay tuned more for updates on the progress and to see the finished product!  #GGUSDSummerSuccess
