A Message from our President, Lynn Ward

Summer is certainly in full swing, and I hope you enjoyed a fun and relaxing 4th of July. You'll find no 'summer slowdown' in the Chamber office, as our staff works to prepare for the many events and programs slated for fall.

The largest of these upcoming opportunities is the Malcolm Baldrige Awards Evening, honoring three individuals in our community who have gone above and beyond to make their impact. This year's dinner will honor Charles J. Boulier III of Ion Bank with the 2018 Malcolm Baldrige Community Award; Timothy D. Bergstrom of Webster B ank with our 2018 Leadership Award; and Joseph Riolo of Route 63 Automotive with the 2018 Volunteer Award. We look forward to hosting a large crowd to help us celebrate these three community leaders on September 26 at the Aqua Turf Club, and are currently accepting reservations, sponsorships and silent auction items.

We're also finalizing plans for the Chamber Foundation's 36th Annual Business Women's Forum, which will feature keynote speaker Bethenny Frankel on October 30. An entrepreneur, investor, philanthropist, author and TV personality, Bethenny is sure to add an insightful and engaging session to our full day of networking, workshops and speakers. I encourage you to learn more about the event by clicking here and explore opportunities for attendance, promotion and sponsorship.

In the meantime, there are a few fantastic networking opportunities coming up, including the July Out for Business at Stone Academy as well as a YPOWR Trivia Night and Happy Hour coming up next week at the Heritage Hotel. We hope to welcome you to one of these events over the coming months. As always, p lease reach out to me if I can be of service to you or your business at (203) 757-0701 or at  lward@waterburychamber.com .

Thanks for being a valued member,
Lynn Signature

HR Corner:
Employers Must Adhere to Rights - Or Pay the Price!
A roofing company in the State of Washington had to pay out   $63,486  (in back pay and medical bills) to a former employee, to resolve a (Federal) Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) claim. The U.S. Department of Labor investigators determined that although the employee did not ask for the rights, the company knew he had a serious health condition, so they were negligent when they did not inform him of his rights.

The employee should have been informed about his rights and MT Baker (roofing company) did not notify him about the leave or his right to come back to his job afterward or that his benefits were protected while on leave. Additionally, they wrongfully terminated the employee's employment while he was out for the illness.

Employers should realize that employees need not use any special phrases or even mention the FMLA to qualify for leave and other protections, and the employers have a responsibility to designate the leave as such when necessary.

HR is usually responsible to ensure that their organization and its managers, comply with these rights to keep the organization out of liability. If you have no HR, you are still required to adhere to these rights to be in compliance; or pay the price!
