THIS CHANGES EVERYTHING!

A Note From Pastor Linda

Now those who were scattered went from place to place, proclaiming the word.
~Acts 8:4

Dear CHURCH,

The GOSPEL- the GOOD NEWS of JESUS- is a truth so demanding and so strange that it can be difficult to understand, to fully believe, to share!   Flannery O'Connor wrote, "Our beliefs are not what we see; they are the light by which we see." For the new Christians in the Book of Acts their belief in the resurrection of Jesus gave them a completely new light by which to look at all of life. Because this new light shines on every aspect of life, the early church took some brave steps. Today, as followers of Jesus, People of the Way- we too are called to see differently and take brave steps- to share the love, grace, hope of Jesus... because THIS changes EVERTHING!
From June 26-July 2 Hosanna's Youth Gathering Team (11 youth plus 3 adult leaders) spent time together in worship, service, fun and more at the ELCA Youth Gathering in Houston, Texas. They were NOT alone- some 30,000+ others were with them. The themes were:
  • God's CALL changes everything
  • God's LOVE changes everything
  • God's GRACE changes everything
  • God's HOPE changes everything
  • JESUS CHANGES EVERYTHING

The guiding scripture was Ephesians 2.8:
"For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God."
Grace is a foundational and distinctive piece of the Lutheran faith. This gift, undeserved and freely given, changes lives and perspectives as people realize they are enough because of what Christ has done and are called into the world to serve their neighbor and share the good news. (This sounds like the BOOK of ACTS- that we have been diving into all summer.)

The gathering logo is a visual representation of the theme- THIS CHANGES EVERYTHING- and the 2018 Gathering experience. It incorporates the coming together of a mosaic to reflect the diverse host city of Houston, as well as the idea that we are a church where  all  are imperfect and incomplete, yet we each belong in - and have an important place in - God's masterpiece. The cross at the center of the logo is the focus - it is God's grace, through Christ's life, death and resurrection, that changes everything for all people. This is the radical GOOD NEWS of the Book of Acts!

This Sunday, July 15- we will hear from the Youth Gathering Team as they lead us in worship- giving us a glimpse into what they EXPERIENCED in Houston. You won't want to miss it!!

Be the CHURCH - invite a neighbor to join you!

SECOND Thursday of the month because Independence Day (Fourth of July) is in the middle of the first week of July.  Several folks will be out of town the week of the fourth, so, we decided to shake things up a little and meet for lunch on July 12th. We hope you will be able to join us!  We have reservations at The
Northern Lake Tavern and Grill just west of Chisago City.

We hope you will be able to join us!  I have requested at least four chairs for those of you who prefer to not sit on a bench.  Please let me know if you will able to join us so I can let the restaurant know roughly how many to expect.   That being said, please feel free to join us if you realize at the last minute that you can join us after-all.  There is always room for more chairs at the table!

Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng
Monday, July 25
6:30pm

We will be discussing the book " Little Fires Everywhere" by Celeste Ng, which was named Best Book of the Year by NPR, Amazon, Barnes & Noble and is a New York Times Best Seller!

Little Fires Everywhere begins with a house fire and a question: Who set it, and why? The house belongs to Elena and Bill Richardson, a wealthy white couple who epitomize success in picture-perfect, late-90's Shaker Heights, and their four teenage children, including girl-next-door, Lexie and the troubled prankster, Izzy, who is suspected of arson. "The firemen said there were little fires everywhere," Lexie says. "Multiple points of origin. Possible use of accelerant. Not an accident." Author Ng returns to the past for answers.

We will gather at Curt and Kelly Monson's home on Forest Lake at 8336 North Shore Trail and head out on the pontoon for an evening of conversation and connection. Contact Pastor Linda with questions.
