Day 17: It's Woodstock Time!!

Destination: Woodstock, New York

Woodstock, NY is located in heart of the Catskill mountains in the Hudson River Valley, 2 hours north of NYC. It is the community where arts and music started to thrive in the early 1900's and continues to this day.

Fun Facts: Many know Woodstock, NY for the famous 1969 Woodstock Festival, but it was actually held 60 miles away at Max Yasgur's dairy farm in Bethel, NY. However, Bob Dylan, in his heyday, hung out and created music in Woodstock and Van Morrison wrote "Moondance" there. Thousands of artists and dreamers have continued to be drawn to this part of the Catskills by the region's natural mountain beauty and peaceful, easy feeling.

Art Form: Tuned Chimes from Woodstock Chimes

Since 1979, and the founding of Woodstock Chimes, Garry Kvistad has been on a path to make the world's best sounding wind chimes. It started as a passion for music in 4th grade and continued through university studies where he studied music, art and physics in the pursuit of building musical instruments.

Gary's first endeavor was to build a musical instrument using materials found at the local landfill. It was made from the aluminum tubes of discarded lawn chairs! Garry was fascinated by the Scales of Olympos, a 7th century Greek pentatonic scale. He cut and tuned the lawn chair tubes to

the exact frequency of the scale and created a "metallophone." He later turned more of those tubes into an instrument that the wind could play randomly. Thus Woodstock Chimes was born....

Woodstock Chimes are made of aluminum tubes carefully tuned to a specific scale or well-known piece of music. This fine tuning makes Woodstock Chimes especially beautiful and unique. Woodstock Chimes inspire, entertain and bring pleasure to people of all ages.

The story of "how it all started" and the continued heart and soul of Woodstock Chimes is really a fascinating story of Garry Kvistad and his artist wife Diane.

The Woodstock Chimes Story

As well as being an entrepreneur and designer of wind chimes, Gary has had an

illustrious career as a professional percussionist playing with many orchestras in North America and Europe. He won a Grammy in 1998 and since 2002 has performed with NEXUS, a world renowned percussion group.

Woodstock Chimes, a family-run business, continues to produce musically tuned, affordable, high-quality chimes and instruments that enhance well-being through beautiful sights and sounds.

Garry and Diane are active in the Woodstock Community helping to support the arts and food and shelter programs.

Through their charitable foundation, The Woodstock Chimes Fund, they have assisted artists and humanitarian efforts, mostly in the Hudson Valley. They are committed to sustainable business practices and 2019 marked the 40th year of Woodstock Chimes, which are now and have always been "Powered by the Wind."

As we worked on loading pictures and information about chimes into our online store, the beautiful tinkling sounds of the chime samples rang out in our office. It was such a pleasant accompaniment to our work. When we got to the sounds of the bamboo chimes, Lonnie and I both reacted with immediate remembrances of our being in Bali in 1997 and how we were enchanted by the sounds of bamboo. I hope you take time to click through the chimes and hear the short recordings. Maybe listen with your eyes closed to see if you can pick out the familiar tunes or sounds.
