Thursday May 7, 2020 - A Reflection

This past Sunday’s homily was based on that gospel reading where Jesus tells the pharisee’s directly that “I am the gate.” The Gate can be thought of as the space that is the between , neither here nor there, neither yesterday nor tomorrow. It is the now . Jesus is the sheep Gate where we can both persevere and rest during the pandemic. It is the sheep Gate that gives us hope. For our part, we are called to grow in trust.

Thomas Merton wrote this timeless prayer. You may be familiar with it.

My Lord God, I have no idea where I am going. I do not see the road ahead of me. I do not know for certain where it will end. Nor do I really know myself, and the fact that I think I am following your will does not mean that I am actually doing so. But I believe that the desire to please you does in fact please you. And I hope I have that desire in all that I am doing. I hope I will never do anything apart from that desire. And I know that if I do this, you will lead me by the right road, though I may know nothing about it.

Therefore I will trust you always though I may seem to be lost and in the shadow of death. I will not fear for you are ever with me, and you will never leave me to face my perils alone.

As we live our transforming experience within the Gate, our desire to grow is nurtured in the All-Inclusive Love of the Shepherd.

It is wondrous that Jesus is the Gate, Jesus, the Loving shepherd.

Christ is ever with us. God is faithful from age to age.

Go in peace as the heart and mind of Christ.
