LAPD Headquarters the Los Angeles Community Action Network announced our lawsuit against the City of Los Angeles, LAPD, and the Central City East Association because of their coordinated efforts to silence LA CAN, prevent us from exercising our first amendment rights, and their malicious acts that resulted in the wrongful prosecution of one of LA CAN's longest term organizers, Deborah Burton.

Mubarak’s arrest comes as Hales, who oversees the Portland Police Bureau (PPB), has quietly been ramping up harassment of people without housing. The most controversial of his tactics have been police sweeps of communities of houseless people under bridges and in other relatively sheltered areas. During these sweeps, police confiscate personal possessions, some of which, such as sleeping bags and medicines, are necessary for houseless people to survive. On frigid nights, such as during the cold snap that Portland recently experienced, taking a person’s sleeping bag and tent can be tantamount to an execution.

Homeless Bill of Rights Campaign WEST COAST DAYS OF ACTIONS

During the weekend before Martin Luther King Day, 11 cities in three states participated in the West Coast Days of Action to bring attention to the need for Homeless Bills of Rights. Homeless Bill of Rights are necessary because homeless people in cities across the nation are being prohibited from sleeping, sitting or lying down to rest, living in their vehicles, and other acts that are required in order to survive. Cities and counties have made laws against these acts of living, instead of increasing capacity in their emergency shelters and housing programs.
