Does a Whiskey Brand Need to Do Its Own Distilling?
We try to put this age-old question to bed.
By Heather Greene, The Daily Beast
"I heard certain whiskies that aren't distilled by the actual distillery listed on the label and come from somewhere else, can make you sick!"
A woman excitedly told me this factoid at a private whiskey tasting that I recently hosted. I assured her that the bourbon I was pouring would not make her sick-unless, of course, she drank too much of it.
The next day, a few journalists called me alarmed by a story that they had just read about brands bottling whiskey they didn't make but had bought on the open market. Several emails came in with headlines like: "Can we talk to you about shady whiskey companies?"

Seattle distillers make a spirited case
for
barrel-aged gin
By AJ Rathbun,

Captive Spirits founders Holly Robinson and Ben Capdevielle produce Big Gin aged in old bourbon barrels. |
When drinkers consider brown-hued spirits that have spent time in barrels, whiskey is the booze that usually comes to mind. But it hasn't always been that way. In the 18th century, gin, too, was stored, shipped and sold in barrels-before it developed its current reputation as a clear, young, juniper-heavy spirit bottled in glass immediately after distillation.
About 10-15 years ago, U.S. craft distillers started slowly experimenting again with aging gin in barrels, which means the spirit has spent some time in a wooden vessel after the distilling process. Since then, the idea of barrel-aged gin-sometimes also referred to as "cask-finished" or "dark gin"-has been seeping into the cocktail consciousness, and many Washington distillers are leading the way.

Delaware's liquor industry growing through collaboration
By Ian Gronau,
Delaware State News

Mike Rasmussen, left, and Ron Gomes, co-owners of
Painted Stave Distilling in Smyrna, stand outside their soon-to-be completed barrel house.
|
Although small, Delaware's distilled spirits industry is relying on a creative and collaborative recipe to grow. With the newest addition of easySpeak Distilling in Milford last December, there are about four in the state. Several of them are making large investments in their future, and with the signing of House Bill 373 last month - a law that permits licensed Delaware craft distilleries, breweries and wineries to sell one another's products for on-site consumption - sustained revenue growth in the sector may be possible.
Appealing to trend to transform distilleries into "destinations," Painted Stave Distilling in Smyrna is in the midst of adding a 6,000 square-foot patio to their location. Also, they just completed an over $200,000 pole-barn style barrel house on the rear end of their property.

Distilled spirits post another year of volume increases, per the 2018 Liquor Handbook
By Beverage Information Group
NORWALK, Conn., July 17, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- The distilled spirits industry saw its 20th consecutive year of volume growth, rising 2.1% in 2017 to 227.7 million nine-liter cases. According to the Beverage Information Group's 2018 Liquor Handbook, consumers are spending more and drinking more-an increase of 6.7 million cases over the previous year. The ongoing interest in high-end and super-premium products across the spirits segments, combined with continued confidence in the U.S. economy, helped fuel the growth.
What's driving the premiumization trend? Consumers today have more opportunities to expand their knowledge of all beverage alcohol categories. They can explore their increasing options with the help of brand ambassador programs, experiential events/tastings and the bartending/mixologist community. Read more.

Owners of Evil Roy's Distillery discuss business
By Erin Hawkins, Sequin Gazette
Evil Roy's Distillery serves several creative alcoholic concoctions, from a salsa flavored agave spirit to a pumpkin based rum to a green gin at its new tasting room at 209 S. Sequim Ave.
Business owners Eric and Janice Oster said their distillery [held] a grand opening for its tasting room from 4:30- 9 p.m. on Friday, July 13, with a ribbon cutting at 5 p.m.

Nicholas "Nik" Strauser was 6 when he started learning how to cook from his mother and grandmother in Hawaii. He would grow up to become a professional cook, then eventually move to Las Vegas. How Matchbook Distilling Company Can Make Any Custom Spirit You Dream Up
By Andy Meek, Tasting Table
The female-led distillery is looking to shake up the spirits world
Leslie Merinoff is tired of typical run-of-the-mill liquor stores, where the shelves, she argues, are filled with the same bottles available everywhere else, most likely containing the same dozen or so recipes.
Though the U.S. spirits industry is witnessing a "craft boom," the scales are still very much tipped toward big players who can afford to invest enough coin to achieve scale. The small producers? Not so much. Luckily, Merinoff is out to change all that. Read more

The most iconic drink in every state
Infographic By Danielle Grinberg, VinePair
Ours is a country of enormous geographic breadth and diversity, and so, unsurprisingly, drinking preferences vary by state. Using a BuzzFeed Community poll from March 2018, VinePair mapped what readers voted the most iconic beer, wine, cocktail, and spirit in every state. Some picks are new to us, such as Alaska's tricolor concoction of Kahlua, Baileys, and Crown Royal Canadian Whisky. Others, like New Jersey's shot of choice, are exceedingly familiar.
