Tamara Herberline, 44, and her husband were living in their worn down 1976 mobile home, when their in-home services representative came for an annual visit. It was then that Tamara learned about Self-Help Enterprises (SHE) and the County of Merced’s Housing Rehabilitation Program. “My in-home worker said her mother went through the rehab program and I was hopeful,” said Tamara. 
 
Tamara’s medical issues began shortly after her mother passed away in 2016. She was declared disabled in 2017 and uses a walker to move around. Both Tamara and her husband realized their home was not safe and were relieved to learn about SHE. 
 
“It was bad. There were weak spots in the floor. In fact, my husband ended up falling right through the floor. No heater and no insulation,” said Tamara. “It was also hard to have friends over because of the worry they would get hurt.” Read more.

"TCE was excited to rekindle its partnership with SHE via a direct Program-Related Investment in 2020," said Christine Ryan, Manager of Program-Related Investments at TCE. "As a statewide foundation, TCE recognizes SHE as a key capital actor in a nonurban ecosystem. TCE’s impact investing team (IIT) was eager to support SHE via loan capital to further its mission. SHE’s value goes well beyond housing, and the IIT wanted investment funding to support an organization with a clear commitment to community and sustainability. The partnership also offers an opportunity for SHE and TCE Staff to deepen our relationship."
Dooley Scholarship Application Now Open
The Doris Dooley Scholarship, named after SHE's former board member and dedicated friend of the organization, was established to help the children of SHE's participant families to further their education. Participants and their children as well as approved helpers and their children are eligible. Deadline to apply is March 12, 2021. Download application here.

PATHWAYS TO HOPE

In partnership with LISTOS California, Health and Human Services of Tulare County and Friends of Tulare County, we would like to share our first Pathways to Hope publication created to offer our community information regarding COVID-19, natural disasters and their impact on those who are affected by homelessness and domestic violence. The publication also touches on mental health and suicide awareness and prevention.
NEW LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITY

SHE will be hosting the first Board Sustainability Leadership Institute, a new training program for small community water board members that have been serving on their boards for two years or fewer. Topics will cover information about different types of entities, regulations that apply to boards, reporting for water systems, water infrastructure project management and more.
