July Third Thursday:
Marketing, Schmoozing, and Building Connections as a Writer

It's tempting to think that book marketing consists entirely of sending out review copies, emailing with bookstore reps, and shameless plugging your work on social media. In reality, marketing often does not resemble targeted outreach for specific projects. Instead, it takes the form of informal conversations and the discovery and creation of a community of writers and readers. WLT Program Director Michael Noll will moderate this panel of published authors talking about specific strategies and general practices that have worked for them:
- Dixie Evatt, author, with Sue Meredith Cleveland, of the Crispin Leads Mysteries Series, written under the pen name Meredith Lee;
- Alyssa Harad, author of the memoir Coming to My Senses;
- Marshall Ryan Maresca, author of the Maradaine Saga series;
- and Christina Soontornvat, author of The Changelings and other titles for young readers.

Jump Start Your Novel

If you have an idea for a novel floating around in your head, but you don't know where to start, this class is for you. The instructor will show how to develop your concept, flesh out your characters, and establish your setting. From plotting an outline to polishing an opening page, the class will cover everything a writer needs to kick-start a manuscript with compelling tension and a vivid, distinct voice. This class will also cover tips and tricks for crafting a compelling opening chapter, including common pitfalls to avoid.
Registration closes Wednesday, July 18, at 5 p.m. CST. Everyone who registers will have access to the class recording until July 26.

ONLINE CLASS
Conceiving and Structuring Personal Essays
with Antonio Ruiz-Camacho
Wednesday, August 8, 2018
6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. CST
Learn to pair traditional journalistic methods and structures with the narrative energy of short fiction and memoir in order to craft compelling essays.The class will focus on basic elements and structures, figuring out the frame of the essay, what to summarize and what to put into short scenes, how structure changes depending on length (800 words versus, say, 2000), and expectations of fact-checkers and how to fact check your own memory.
Registration closes Wednesday, August 8, at 5 p.m. CST. Everyone who registers will have access to the class recording until August 16.

Kallisto Gaia Press announces two new summer writing contests: The
2018 Julia Darling Memorial Poetry Prize, judged by Carrie Fountain, and
The 2018 Chester B. Himes Memorial Short Fiction Prize, judged by Antonio Ruiz-Camacho. Each winner will receive a prize of $750.00 and publication in The Ocotillo Review Winter 2019. A portion of any revenue generated from submissions will be donated to charity. The deadline for both contests is August 20. Find more details here.
