Staff honored for lifesaving efforts
The Washington County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday honored Land Use & Transportation (LUT) employees for their lifesaving response when a customer collapsed in the Planning and Development Services (PDS) lobby.
On June 14, a customer collapsed and was unconscious and nonresponsive. LUT's Jon Czerniak, GIS analyst and volunteer EMT with Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue, performed CPR and utilized the AED. Other staff called 911 and cleared the lobby. By the time emergency medical personnel arrived, the customer had regained a pulse and was communicative.
"These PDS employees worked as a team to save a man's life," said Andrew Singelakis, LUT Director. "They responded calmly and efficiently, and I am very proud of them."
The Board and Washington County Health and Human Services (HHS) honored Czerniak with a lifesaving award. HHS staff also recognized the emergency responders from multiple agencies who assisted in the lifesaving effort.
"What happened on June 14 is just one great example of the success that can happen when the links in the
chain of survival are in play," said Dr. Ritu Sahni, Washington County EMS Medical Director. "... We are exceptionally proud of policymakers who support bold action in Washington County, Jon and the staff at LUT and all emergency responders and healthcare providers."
All 12 PDS staff involved in the June 14 response were further recognized with a Lifesavers display in the PDS lobby following the Board meeting. In addition to Czerniak, PDS employees recognized were:
- Carine Arendes, Associate Planner
- Nathan Don, Plans Examiner II
- Celia Gust, ITS Project Manager
- Joe Hayes, GIS Analyst
- Anne Kelly, Senior Planner
- Rose Kniesteadt, Senior Building Permit Tech
- Don Pierce, Plans Examiner II
- Josh Pitner, Building Permit Tech II
- Ken Rencher, Senior Planner
- Carol Scott, Senior Building Permit Tech
- Pamela Van Scoyk, Building Permit Tech II
