2018 Has Been a Busy Year for the BIA -- and We Aren't Done Yet

For your North State BIA, 2018 has been a busy and critically important year as we continue to work to promote homebuilding and homeownership in the greater Sacramento area. We've prepared a short summary of our efforts on your behalf,
which you can read here.
We continue to put our main emphasis on government affairs efforts, and have succeeded in fighting back fees and regulations that could have cost builders tens of thousands of dollars per home.
During the second half of the year, we will continue those efforts, and also play a major role in local elections. Our political action committee will raise $300,000 during this election cycle, which is more than any other PAC in the region and in line with the highest amounts we have ever raised.
To help BIA become even more effective, we've strengthened our government affairs team by hiring two experienced professionals who between them have more than 30 years' experience in politics and government and are highly regarded in the community. Crisand Giles, our director of policy and initiatives, previously was a key player with both Shea Homes and Pardee Homes and before that was a senior staff member with the BIA of the Bay Area. And Jeff Short, our new legislative advocate, was a former staffer for two area legislators and has a great understanding of local issues, local players, and the Capitol.
Of course, the BIA also works to provide our members with educational and networking opportunities, and to give back to our community through HomeAid Sacramento and our North State Building Industry Foundation. We invite you to review the Mid-Year Highlights, and welcome your thoughts and suggestions on how we can make the BIA an even more effective advocate for our industry.

SACOG Launches Over $12.5 Million in Competitive Grants
Four new competitive grant programs are available this summer with over $12.5 million in available funding. The grants vary from temporary activations under $10,000 to large infrastructure projects and are available to partners across the region. As the Sacramento region positions itself to be the test bed of innovation while launching performance-based programs, these grants will spur public private partnerships as SACOG pursues unique ways to reduce congestion and improve air quality. Placer County Advances Multi-Family Housing Development in North Auburn
Continuing Placer County's commitment to creating solutions for attainable housing, the Board of Supervisors approved staff to move forward with a proposed multi-family housing and workforce housing development in North Auburn. The board unanimously approved an option to ground lease agreement with Mercy Housing California that could lead to the development of a 79-unit, family-oriented apartment and townhome project on three acres of county property at its government center campus. County staff also noted that 15 units would be set aside for special needs housing, which could be eligible for $1.5 million in funding under California's No Place Like Home Program.
Placer County Details Progress on Housing Crisis
In just 10 months, Placer County has accomplished most of the tasks in its first-ever housing work plan to address the housing affordability crisis, with the rest nearing completion before the end of the year. The county's housing work plan approaches the problem through four main focus areas: creating more incentives to build attainable and workforce housing, changing regulations to make building easier, advocating for state and federal assistance, and furthering partnerships for meeting regional housing needs. Big 75th Anniversary Kickoff Event Is Just a Week Away

This event at the California Railroad Museum will feature live music and dancing with Northern California's premier funk, soul, rock, and R&B horn band
Hipper Than Hip.
Included will be heavy hors d'oeuvres, no-host bars, networking, and fun with industry professionals and community leaders.

Don't Forget Free Member Appreciation Luncheon This Friday
Aloha! BIA invites all members to attend the annual Member Appreciation Luau this Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Pacific Supply Design Center, 5550 Roseville Road in North Highlands.
Hosted for the third year by Pacific Coast Building Products, the luau will include an all-you-can-eat lunch, a tiki bar, and raffle prizes. You're encouraged to come in Hawaiian attire, and leis will be provided.
MAME Awards Submissions Are Now Open
Submissions for this year's MAME Awards will be accepted through July 31. MAME Forty Three will recognize the industry's most outstanding builders, trades, and design professionals who have distinguished themselves by delivering their best every day.

Volunteers Still Needed for
15th Annual Trap Shoot
The 15th annual Trap Shoot is coming up on August 24. This is HomeAid's largest fundraiser of the year, and there is still a need for volunteers to help HomeAid pull off another great event. A limited number of sponsorship opportunities available as well. Please email Vangelina

Work Is Under Way on HomeAid's Latest Building Project
HomeAid's latest Building project is under way at My Sister's House. Hallmark Building and Development and Kenton C. Russell, Architect, are serving as Builder Captains to remodel My Sister's House community room/class room and add a kitchenette and storage space. Progress is going well and HomeAid is looking forward to celebrating the completed project soon. Special thanks to trade partners including S&G Drywall/Construction and Timberlake Cabinets.
My Sister's House serves Asian and Pacific Islander and other underserved women and children impacted by domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking.
Rivinius-Orr Golf Tournament Made Major Contribution to HomeAid's Work
We're still adding our final tally on all proceeds, but it looks like HomeAid will top last year's Rivinius-Orr Tournament with over $45K.
This is due in large part to the generosity of our wonderful building, trades, and community partners!

The Sacramento Bee interviewed interns and Taylor Morrison site superintendent Mike Jacobs for an article about the Foundation's construction internship program for incoming high school seniors and selected Out of School Youth. The Foundation invited the media to an event recognizing the program at Taylor Morrison's Madeira East development in Elk Grove on June 29.
In a
story and video, the region's major newspaper explained why programs such as this benefit students by giving them hands-on experience in trades such as painting, framing, HVAC, and plumbing.
A total of 34 interns completed the first four-week session on June 29, and 28 more begin their program today. Builders participating in one or both sessions are Anthem United, Lennar, Taylor Morrison, and USA Properties. Trade partners working with the interns are
Black Diamond Electric, Central Valley Painting, Creative Design Interiors, CVC, Deal Mechanical, Eagle Lathe and Plastering, Fenceworks, Fletcher Plumbing, Hutton Lovewell, L&S Framing, Marticus Electric, Production Framing, Rayco Electric, Sommercal Concrete, Timberlake Cabinets, Timberworks, and Villara Building Systems.
