Contagious Love and Compassion:
Serving at Tricounty Family Ministries
by Amey Warder, Home Missions Team
|
|
I did it! I stepped out and volunteered my time and energy to help prepare food for the weekly giveaway at Tricounty Family Ministries. Along with sandwiches, fresh vegetables, and fruit, TFM will give out pantry food, hygiene kits, and freshly prepared chicken. My job today: prepping peanut butter and jelly sandwiches to be given out tomorrow! Could there be a better job for a mother of three boys than prepping PB&Js?
Something I want to share today is how I was touched by the other volunteers I get to serve with at TFM. As always it was great to be lifted up by the act of serving others––it never fails to do the spirit and heart good. Another part of the joy of volunteering is witnessing people give their time, talent, heart, and energy to others. As always, we strike up conversations and I learn about amazing people. Every volunteer has a story of why they volunteer or how they found TFM. Each person is special.
Today there was a volunteer who had been a bartender at Leon’s on King St. (ironically my favorite place to dine out in Charleston), but since COVID-19, she has lost that job.

St. Philippian Contributions to the Spring
Jubilate Deo
|
|
St. Philippians are finding themselves in unexpected situations during this time of isolation, and we can read about some of them in the spring edition of the Anglican Diocese of South Carolina's
Jubilate Deo! Elizabeth Lipscomb looked past the loneliness she felt worshipping from home and found that there was actually much to be grateful for. Pringle Franklin prayed through her fear of running out of toilet paper, knowing that God would provide in some way––even if that meant her family would have to "use something crazy." Lynn Land Dayton shared some information about St. Philip's Generations Ministry and recommended to the grandparents of the diocese
Frog's Rainy-Day Adventure, written and illustrated by St. Philippians Michael and Sarah Buell Dowling.
|
|
The
Jubilate Deo is filled with other great reads, too, including an interview with Bishop Lawrence, tips for stress relief from the rector of St. Bartholomew's in Hartsville, and a narrative from a six-foot tall, 70-year-old woman who responded to God's call to start a ukulele band ("The Ukuloonies"!).

St. Philip's Staff Virtual Choir's Triumphant Return
|
|
Pictured above: Yesterday's staff meeting with "virtual choir" attempt #5: Happy birthday, Denise Pickford and Sarah Silcox! Did resting our voices last week lead to a melodious and angelic rendition this week? We have no comment.
During this week's virtual staff meeting, we discussed the joys and challenges of working (mostly) from home. Angela Clark and Lee Moore, Co-Directors of the St. Philip's Preschool, shared that the best part of their week is meeting the parents for packet pickup and waving to students through the car windows. One peril of Zoom meetings was nearly illustrated quite clearly when a staffer had to call out to a family member about to enter the room during our meeting. "Stay put!" she warned. "Otherwise you'll be parading around in your pajamas in front of everyone." Some folks are becoming much more technologically advanced in this time of Zoom-ing than their job descriptions really call for, often with help from other members of their household. This is quite a learning experience! But we're missing each other and our fellow parishioners so much.

|
Pictured: Oreo Hethcox, frequent visitor to the church office, two weeks before the office closed. "Speaking of missing things," said Chisolm Leonard yesterday, "I didn't know I could ever miss a little dog
so much!"
Even as many businesses are opening back up in some form, people remain isolated. Please respond to this email or fill out the questionnaire below to let us know how you're doing or what we can do to help you. Our clergy, staff, and various members of our parish are available and eager to assist in so many different ways. Feel free also to give any of the priests a call, if only so they might hear your voice.

Daily Devotions from the St. Philip's Clergy
|
|
These reflections are posted to the news section of our website (
stphilipschurchsc.org/news
) Monday through Friday at 7:00 a.m., but you may also receive direct links to the videos by subscribing below.
Last Thursday,
the Rev. Brian McGreevy
delved into "The King of Love My Shepherd Is," a mixture of Psalm 23 and the great Good News of Jesus himself being our Shepherd.
On Friday,
the Rev. Andrew O'Dell
offered encouragement and guidance to all, especially those whose well might be dry during these stressful times.
The Rev. Marc Boutan
began our week by reminding us that God is a loving father and sharing the ways he himself stays in God's love. Yesterday,
the Rev. Ryan Streett
took a closer look at the heart of Psalm 23: "For you are with me." Today, the Rev. Jeff Miller will be talking to us about the parable of the Good Samaritan from Luke 10.

Congratulations, Graduates!
|
|
O Eternal God, bless all schools, colleges, and universities, that they may be lively centers for sound learning, new discovery, and the pursuit of wisdom; and grant that those who teach and those who learn may find you to be the source of all truth; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
