ONE-DAY SUMMER INSTITUTE: THURSDAY, JUNE 27

For the past three years, The Long Island Pre-K Initiative has sponsored successful Two-Day Summer Institutes at the end of June. This year's school calendar made a two-day event impractical--so we're packing tons of content into a single day, instead.

Date: Thursday, June 27, 2019
Place: Western Suffolk BOCES Conference Center, Wyandanch
TIme: 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. (coffee/tea only in a.m.; lunch included)
Registration Fee: $75 per person
Credit: 6 hours of OCFS or CTLE credit

Keynote:
High-Qualty Learning for a Changing World: Images of Possibilities
Here's an opportunity to see what research-based high-quality learning looks like. Beverly Falk will document how culturally, linguistically and social/emotionally responsive experiential learning activities nurture young children's development. She will share videos of teachers interacting with students in early childhood classrooms, followed by commentary and discussion about how the showcased principles of practice are relevant to your Pre-K and early childhood programs.

Presenter: Beverly Falk is Director of the Graduate Programs in Early Childhood
Education at CCNY's School of Education. In her career, she's been a classroom teacher and a public school founder, and has filled roles as director, district administrator, researcher and consultant. Her most recent book is High Quality Early Learning for a Changing World: What Educators Need to Know and Do (2018).

Choice of Workshops: Each participant will be able to choose two interactive workshops, each an hour-and-a-half long. Topics will include:
  • Making eco-conscious choices for your early childhood program
  • How to participate in the Imagination Library, including engaging families
  • The how and why of successful dual language programs in Pre-K and K
  • Can screen time be developmentally appropriate in early childhood?
  • Classroom-tested strategies for challenging behaviors
  • What the current research reveals about early literacy.

Here are some registration tips:

Click on the words "REGISTER NOW" in bold red letters above.

You are now on the My Learning Plan website, on a page describing the Summer Institute. Click on the blue button that says "enroll." Follow the directions, depending on whether you are a new user or have an existing account.

Note:  Each individual must be registered separately. If you are an organization using a business credit card, the credit card number must be entered for each individual, and you may prefer to centralize registration. Nonetheless, each name must be entered individually and an MLP account created for each person.

If you are a school district employee or a community-based organization staff member, and your employer is using a purchase order for multiple registrants, check "purchase order." You can disregard statements asking you for an "enrollment approval" form.

When asked for your "District/Organization," select Other-Nassau or Other-Suffolk UNLESS you are an employee of the school district. If your paycheck comes from a school district, select the school district you work for.

If you do not get a course confirmation, please log in again to your My Learning Plan account and review your registration information to make sure it is correct.

If you continue to have difficulty with registration, please contact Janet Sluka at 516-396-2263 during regular business hours (8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.) or email prek@nasboces.org
