Legislative Update: Senate Bill 530 Passes the Senate, Heads to Governor's Desk

Senate Bill 530 has passed the Senate!  After they unexpectedly took up the bill Friday evening,  it will soon be on its way to Governor Wolf's desk, where if he signs it, it will become law. Congratulations!

We fought for these protections - protections for our profession, protections for people of the Commonwealth - for a long time. We made phone calls, we sent emails, we visited legislators both in Harrisburg and in their district offices. We contacted them via social media.

We spoke in a clear and unified voice to urge the General Assembly to protect the Commonwealth by limiting the practice of clinical social work to licensed professionals. We also told the General Assembly that licensed clinical social workers should have diagnosis rights, and it agreed.

The progress of Senate Bill 530 is a testament to the power of the social work profession, and to the change that we can effect when we use that power.  This 10-year journey has been a microcosm of our profession: the assessment, the plan, the peaks, the valleys, the close calls, the collective effort...and last but certainly not least, the success.

Congratulations, again, social workers of Pennsylvania!
NASW-PA Deeply Saddened by Death of Antwon Rose, Urge Policing Reforms

STATEMENT: The National Association of Social Workers (NASW) Pennsylvania Chapter is deeply saddened by the death of Antwon Rose, an unarmed Pittsburgh teenager who was shot while running from police. We offer our sincere condolences to his family and friends.

Unfortunately, police shootings of unarmed people of color such as Rose occur too frequently in our nation. NASW again urges policing reforms, including the end of racial profiling and excessive use of police force. We also ask that police improve relations with the communities they serve...  Click here to read the whole statement
2018 Conference Theme Announced: Explore. Connect. Grow.

Each year, there is a theme to NASW-PA's annual conference. Last year it was "Social Workers Stand Up." Social workers were encouraged to stand up in the wake of trying political and social times. This year we are building upon what we've learned in the past and exploring new possibilities. "Explore. Connect. Grow." was an obvious choice for this year's conference. Three days. Three inspiring words. One powerful mantra. This year we will be reminded of the importance of exploration, connection and growth as professional social workers. It's a process that continues for as long as we will let it. Our hope is that you will never stop exploring, connecting and growing. To read this year's theme and rationale, click here.

In addition, we excited to announce our four keynote speakers for the conference! To learn more about this year's conference, click HERE.

  • Jennifer Fox (top right), Award winning film director, Writer & Director of HBO's The Tale
  • Carla Damron (bottom left), prominent mystery fiction author and licensed independent social worker
  • Avish Parashar (bottom right), hilariously energizing improv comedian & change management speaker
MSW Students Practice Placement in Kenya

This picture was taken at Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA) in Nairobi, Kenya. The MSW students pictured here practiced field placements with agencies in Embu, Kenya. Sr. Kevin was their task supervisor for the project. Lloyd Lyter was in Kenya lecturing at Catholic University of Eastern Africa to BSW, MSW, and PhD classes. The group left the U.S. on May 29 and returned on June 26. The students did presentations to faculty, students, and staff at CUEA on Friday June 22, before coming back to the US. This project was funded by the Schierling Foundation through a grant to the School of Social Work at Marywood University. Way to go social work students!
