Legislative Update: Senate Bill 530 Passes the Senate, Heads to Governor's Desk
Senate Bill 530 has passed the Senate!
After they unexpectedly took up the bill Friday evening,
it will soon be on its way to Governor Wolf's desk, where if he signs it, it will become law. Congratulations!
We fought for these protections - protections for our profession, protections for people of the Commonwealth - for a long time. We made phone calls, we sent emails, we visited legislators both in Harrisburg and in their district offices. We contacted them via social media.
We spoke in a clear and unified voice to urge the General Assembly to protect the Commonwealth by limiting the practice of clinical social work to licensed professionals. We also told the General Assembly that licensed clinical social workers should have diagnosis rights, and it agreed.
The progress of Senate Bill 530 is a testament to the power of the social work profession, and to the change that we can effect when we use that power.
This 10-year journey has been a microcosm of our profession: the assessment, the plan, the peaks, the valleys, the close calls, the collective effort...and last but certainly not least, the success.
Congratulations, again, social workers of Pennsylvania!
