Engaging in Remote Learning Opportunities, Upcoming Virtual AACR Annual Meeting
|
Today is Friday and our
weekly seminar
starts at noon - remember to unmute and clap with us at the end of the presentation! This refrain is especially needed for the upcoming - Monday and Tuesday, April 27 and 28 -
American Association for Cancer Research (AACR)
Part I of its annual meeting in virtual format and is available to you at no cost. The second part will be held June 22-24, 2020.
For those working at home, take a break and learn something new. For those coming in every day to maintain research momentum, stay safe, and when you are done, participate from home. Social distancing is easier that way. And for those on the front lines of the incredible clinical cancer care for our patients,
thank you
, and if you get a moment, tune in!
|
|
Though it is a departure from the format of past meetings, the caliber of science is the same, and the virtual meeting format offers a unique opportunity for a large audience to participate at no cost. Part I will feature high-impact paper presentations, including discussion of clinical trials, basic and translational science, and a “New Drugs on the Horizon” symposia that include first disclosures of innovative small molecules and biologics that have recently entered phase I clinical trials. I encourage you to sign up for the meeting and block at least part of the time to hear exciting research presentations and
support your colleagues.
More large meetings will follow this path in the future. The virtual format is a great opportunity to participate in something that may have been inhibited by travel, to draw together experts from across the country to tackle a research or clinical problem, or just connect with others in an increasingly isolated environment.
Whatever the topic - AACR’s Annual Meeting,
our weekly Cancer Center Seminar Series, faculty candidate presentations, community organization talks - please continue to log-on, participate, support each other and share ideas. This exchange of information is essential to keep us all at the cutting edge.
COVID-19 is a horrendous virus, and the outpouring of innovative research that many of us are focused on will help solve this puzzle. And we will return to our work on the even greater complexity that is cancer. Keep your ideas flowing!!

Team Case CCC "rides" on into Virtual VeloSano 2020!
|
Originally scheduled for July 17-19, 2020 in Cleveland, OH, VeloSano 7 is evolving into
Virtual Velosano
to keep our community safe and healthy during the COVID-19 pandemic. While we won't be able to unite in person this summer, we will continue fundraising as the need for cancer research is more important than ever.
Our continuing goal is to bring sustainable funding to cancer research by enlisting the passion and energy of thousands of people who wish to give back... including
YOU! We raised nearly $94,000 in 2019 and every dollar goes directly toward cancer research. In our six years of participation, more than $1,000,000 of VeloSano fundraising totals have come back to the Case CCC to award researchers as
pilot funding for cancer research projects.

Cancer Center Seminar Series
TODAY, April 24, 12p
Our weekly cancer seminar series returns today with Evi Stavrou, MD presenting "Contribution of the Factor XII-uPAR Axis in Ovarian Cancer Maintenance and Progression" at noon.
Dr. Stavrou is a staff physician in the division of hematology-oncology and Director of the Anticoagulation Clinic at the Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center. She is also the Oscar D. Ratnoff Professor in Medicine and Hematology at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine.
Dr. Stavrou's clinical duties are solely focused on patients with hemostatic and thrombotic disorders. The principal focus of the Stavrou lab has been the mechanistic elucidation of zymogen Factor XII functions and the role of the Factor XII - uPAR interactome in neutrophil cell biology. To date, work in the lab has uncovered novel FXII functions that mediate neutrophil priming and contribute to sterile thromboinflammation and impaired wound healing. A new direction in the Stavrou lab is the study of this signaling axis in epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) and the effect of neutrophils in the EOC tumor microenvironment.

Cancer Center Seminar Series
May 8, 12p
Next week's cancer center seminar features
Satish Viswanath, PhD
presenting "Computational Imaging for AI-enabled Interventions in Oncology" at noon via Zoom.
Dr. Viswanath is an assistant professor of biomedical engineering at the Case School of Engineering, an assistant professor of Radiology at the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and a member of the Case CCC's Cancer Imaging Program.
The research in the Viswanath lab focuses on developing novel radiomics and machine learning tools for disease characterization, intervention planning and treatment evaluation. Specific problems addressed via the new quantitative imaging markers they have developed include: (a) predicting response to treatment to identify optimal therapeutic pathways, as well as (b) evaluating therapeutic response to guide follow-up procedures. His lab will further examine how to account for differences between sites, scanners and acquisition parameters on the performance of AI tools and radiomic features; crucial for wider clinical translation. These will be discussed in the context of clinical applications in colorectal, renal and prostate cancers.
