With this note, I happily bid the winter of 2018-2019 a fond fare-the-well! By the time you read this, we will have had snow on the ground for more than 160 days. I'd say that was a great year, and perhaps one for the record books?
Spring is around the corner (I can smell it!) and with the longer days and warmer weather, I am dreaming of sunshine, green grass, planting my flower gardens and dining al fresco. Honestly, it can't come soon enough. But before it does, may I remind everyone that Vermont's Green Up Day is Saturday May 4th. Put on your muck boots, grab a pair of gloves and check in with your town's Green Up coordinator for a road assignment and help us pick up the litter and debris from the winter and get Vermont looking it's best! Spring is here and with warmer weather comes hiking and biking season. Hip hip hooray!
Our corner of Vermont is home to some of the prettiest and most accessible hiking and walking trails in the state. One of our favorites is the West River Trail and the trailhead for the upper section of the trail is right down the road in South Londonderry. From there, you can access 16 miles of the trail, perfect for hikers, walkers, skiers and bikers. The trail links the villages of South Londonderry and Jamaica and includes a section in Townshend as well, with 4,500 acres of public land.
The trail is overseen and maintained by the Friends of the West River Trail (FWRT), a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization "dedicated to the establishment of a 36-mile scenic trail through the West River Valley - eventually linking Brattleboro, Dummerston, Newfane, Townshend, Jamaica and South Londonderry." FWRT's mission is to: Develop and maintain a publicly accessible system of paths along the West River corridor for educational, recreational and alternative transportation purposes. Promote public awareness and enjoyment of the recreational path system and of the history, geology and biota of the West River valley. Coordinate local, state and federal interests in planning, funding, construction, management and use of the trail system.

Weston Playhouse Announces 2019 Summer Season

Susanna Gellert, the new Executive Artistic Director of Weston Playhouse Theatre Company, has unveiled her inaugural season at the helm of Vermont's award-winning professional theater.
The 2019 season includes the world's longest running musical, THE FANTASTICKS; an ode to youth, life, love, and the strange beauty of human connectedness, I AND YOU; a fresh take on the inimitable masterpiece, OKLAHOMA; an evening with one of country music's most celebrated stars, ALWAYS...PATSY CLINE; Edward Albee's famed, thought-provoking drama, WHO'S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF?; and Paula Vogel's Tony-award winning play about a group of actors who risked everything for theater, INDECENT. In addition, the Weston Playhouse Theatre's Young Company presents an adventurous tale based on the beloved children's book, THE PHANTOM TOLLBOOTH.

The Little School's Black Fly Ball

Our area is incredible lucky to have The Little School as one of the premier early education programs serving children ages 2- to 5 from Weston and the surrounding towns, including Chester, Andover, Ludlow, Cavendish, Peru, Landgrove and Londonderry.
One of their biggest fundraisers is coming up and it's a fun evening and supports an incredible resource. Please support Weston's The Little School for their 18th Annual Black Fly Ball on May 4, 2019 at the Weston Playhouse at Walker Farm at 6 pm. The Downtown Grocery and Mama's are catering with delicious appetizers, including a raw bar and carving station. Live music and dancing by local favorite, Muddy Hollow Band. There will be a cash bar, fantastic auction items, and great company. All proceeds will go directly to supporting the youngest members of our community and their early childhood education at The Little School. Marinated Goat Cheese with Lemon
There is something about the arrival of spring that brings bright, fresh flavors to mind and this recipe is easy, bright and fresh as can be.
- 1 log goat cheese (I try to find the largest available)
- 1/2 cup of your best olive oil
- 3 medium to large cloves of garlic
- 1 large lemon (organic if possible)*
- 1 and 1/2 tablespoons coarsely ground fresh pepper
* If lemon is not organic, scrub well under warm water to try to remove some or all of the wax coating.
1. Keep goat cheese refrigerated until step # 5.
2. Using a microplane zester or the small holes of a box-grater, zest the lemon and set aside zest. (use the rest of the lemon for something else)
3. Chop garlic as finely as possible.
4. Place lemon zest, pepper and garlic on a plate and stir together and make a small circle of these ingredients.
5. Remove goat cheese from the refrigerator and roll in mixture above, making sure that all sides are covered in some of the mixture.
6. Please goat cheese in a bowl that is a little bigger than the log and drizzle the olive oil slowly over the log, taking care not to "wash" off all of the zest/spice mixture.
7. Let marinate at room temperature for an hour or so, rolling the log in the olive oil a few times.
8. Serve with a hearty cracker. I especially like Carr's Whole Wheat or anything with a touch of rosemary.

7th Annual "Day in the Dirt" at Smokey House -
Kicking off the 4th season on the Community Farm, the farm is looking for volunteers to prep raised garden beds for future planting, wood chips aisles, add compost, plant seeds, mulch and divide perennials. These programs will be used by local elementary school students, a community school from Manchester and our very own Danby Mountain Day Camp campers. Tools and directions will be provided. The Community seed box will be filled with seeds to take for your home gardens. Bring seeds to share and swap! The Collaborative's West River Trail Run is 11 miles of fun and exciting terrain from South Londonderry to Jamaica State Park following the West River. The run starts at 9:00am at the South Londonderry Depot. Registration for 11 mile individual run is $35 until March 31st. $45 from April 1st to May 31st. Registration for the 5K is $25.
