American Society of Transplantation: PATIENTS Act would limit access to transplantation
 
AAKP stands with the American Society of Transplantation in opposition of the Dialysis Patient Access to Integrated-care, Empowerment, Nephrologists and Treatment Services Demonstration Act, also known as the PATIENTS Demonstration Act.  AAKP, along with AST, dialysis provider Dialysis Clinic, Inc., and the Kidney Care Alliance, all  believe this legislation would limit patient access to transplantation, limit patient choice, and favor the country's two largest for-profit dialysis organizations.

World Transplant Games in Houston culminates dream
 
The 2021 World Transplant Games will be held in Houston, bringing the event to American soil for the first time in 41 years. 
 
When the news dropped on social media Wednesday morning that Houston had been chosen to host the 2021 World Transplant Games, Donna Esposito couldn't help herself.  She started dancing around the house, she said, like a fool.  Once she finished her little celebration, her phone started ringing and the emails piled up in her inbox. People wanted to know what they could do to help; how they could volunteer.  "I sort of expected it,'' she said, "because of knowing Houstonians and how they rise to the cause for everything.'' 

For Esposito, the manager of Methodist Hospital's Multi-Organ Transplant Floor, the announcement that the World Games were coming back to the U.S. for the first time in 41 years was the culmination of a dream that started more than two decades ago when she took her first team to the 1994 Transplant Games of America in Atlanta.

After transplant, higher chance of developing skin cancer
While organ transplantation gives patients who would otherwise have a very short life expectancy the chance to live for many years, it comes with substantial risks. For example, patients must take medication for the rest of their lives to suppress their immune systems so they will not attack and reject the donor organ. Unfortunately, there are many side effects of this treatment, including an increased risk of infections - and a very high risk of certain types of cancer, including skin cancer.
