lemonade... good news from newport

Happy July!

There is always so much to do during high-season in a tourist town like ours, and as usual I've provided many of my favorite options below. But sometimes, don't you find that the best thing to do in summer is NOTHING? ... in a good location of course! So after you've filled your schedule with must-do events, save a date or two to just relax and recharge at the beach or in your own backyard this month. ENJOY IT ALL, because before you know it we'll be looking at Labor Day!

NIMFEST's Free Gazebo Concert Series starts today with Folk / C eltic / Bluegrass artists Ramblin' Rhode, Grace Morrison Trio and the Slackwater String Band . The King Park concerts continue each Sunday throughout July and August with different themes including Pop, Originals, Singer-Songwriter, Blues, Folk and Global Fusion. Follow the NIMFEST facebook page for artist updates. Ballard Park hosts Chelly, Bill & Dyl on 7/18 and The Ravers

on 7/25. The Live Local Music & Arts Festival takes place on 7/21 and the Newport BridgeFest runs from 7/30- 8/2 (between the Newport Folk and Jazz Festivals) and includes a Newport to Nashville Songwriter's Showcase on 7/31. My picks at the The Narrows Center for the Arts

this month include Big Al Anderson on 7/7, Kinky Friedman on 7/11, Robert Cray Band on 7/18, Patty Griffin on 7/24, Billy Strings on 7/26 and Ruthie Foster on 7/27. The Greenwich Odeum also has a strong line-up with the Lori McKenna Band tonight (7/1), Sophie B. Hawkins on 7/18, The Magpie Salute on 7/20 and Todd Rundgren on 7/28!

In summertime, it usually takes a rainy day to get me into a dark theater, but there may be a few exceptions this month. The Beatles freshly restored and remastered Yellow Submarine will be shown at the Jane Pickens on 7/11 (>click the poster to view the trailer) and Gimmie Shelter is playing at the Greenwich Odeum on 7/27. Weather permitting, NewportFILM has a number of outdoor screenings planned including Three Identical Strangers on 7/5, Far From The Tree on 7/12, The Serengeti Rules on 7/19 and Two Trains Runnin' on 7/26. Back at the JPT, two altogether different options are the Great Gatsby Movie Experience on 7/15 and Hair (1979) on 7/29.
