Sing Sistah Sing! Here Monday Night
|
World-renowned mezzo-soprano Andrea Baker will perform
Sing Sistah Sing! in our sanctuary at 7:00 p.m. Monday, April 15. A mixture of storytelling, jazz, blues, opera, art song, gospel, and (on that evening) the rollicking piano of Peter Maleitzke, this show has won great international critical acclaim.
Sing Sistah Sing! is both a celebration of the extraordinary breadth of the African American female voice and a heartfelt retelling of inspiring life stories. It brilliantly weaves together these women's struggles in the civil rights movement and in their fight for artistic freedom at home and abroad. Augmenting this theme, Baker is scheduled to talk about Civil Rights/Truth and Reconciliation with Pauline Moore from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. this Sunday, April 14, at Lee Street Baptist Church.
|
Bristol Sings for Bristol Faith in Action
|
Bristol Sings!, an evening of music to benefit Bristol Faith in Action, will be presented Saturday, April 27, at 7:00 p.m. at State Street United Methodist Church. Featured performers include musicians well-known to our congregation: Shannan Miller, Tim Landis, Robin Ringer LaPointe, and Janeeva Brown. The UMC Community Choir and the choirs of Lee Street Baptist Church, Central Presbyterian Church, Tennessee High School, and Vance Middle School will add their stirring voices, and Dr. Doug LaPointe, emcee, will further enliven the evening with his comedy.
Admission is free, but a donation of $10 is suggested. State Street UMC is located at 300 W. Valley Drive in Bristol, VA. You can find more information about BFIA at
WWW.BRISTOLFIA.ORG and on Facebook.

Billy Kim Brings Korean Children's Choir to FPC
|
We have an extraordinary treat in store for our church and community on the Sunday after Easter. At 6:30 on
April 28 the celebrated Korean Children's Choir will bring their songs and dances to our sanctuary. Other churches they have visited have described their concerts as "a blessing, beyond our expectations" and "a glimpse of heaven."
Fifty colorfully costumed professionals between the ages of seven and thirteen will sing American folk arrangements, patriotic songs, sacred and popular music, contemporary Christian songs, and traditional Korean songs, and all in English. This energetic choir has performed at Disneyland, Disney World, the Pentagon, Walter Reed Medical Center, and at too many conventions, churches, universities, and music festivals to name. The children are selected through a rigorous audition process and receive instruction from a voice trainer, a choreographer, and a conductor.
|
|
|
Billy Kim
|
The choir will be accompanied by "the Billy Graham of South Korea," evangelist and broadcaster Dr. Billy (Jang Hwan) Kim. Dr. Kim was president of the Baptist World Alliance from 2000
to 2005 and is now chairman of the Far East Broadcasting Company in Korea, which organized the Children's Choir as an international outreach ministry.
The choir does not charge an admission fee, but we will collect a love offering for their ministry. Plan to be there!

Student Ministries Volunteer Spotlight
|
This week the Student Ministries volunteer spotlight is on
Stuart Parker. Stuart has served our students through teaching high school Sunday School. His passion for students to know truth is contagious. He has a great vision for building relationships and walking with teens as they grow in faith. He looks for special ways to celebrate and encourage them to be committed to seeking truth and growing with their church family. He is down-to-earth, consistent, and genuine, and our students love and respect him. He is a gift to our Student Ministries, and we are so thankful for his love and commitment to share truth with students. Stuart, thank you for loving our students so BIG!
Any member of the congregation who feels called to serve in Student Ministries can contact
Katie Arnold at
karnold@fpcbristol.org. She would love to have you on the team!

How the Bro-Down Showdown Went Down
|
More than 30 middle school and high school guys gathered at the church last Thursday for a night of eating like kings, competing like Vikings, and broing down as only bros can. The group at the Student Ministries Bro-Down Showdown played games, focused on what it looks like to be a Christian bro, broed it up around a bonfire, and if they were lucky, got a few hours of sleep. The fun even led them to King University's Kline Gym for a couple of hours of archery tag. A big
thank you to King University and
Chase Arndt for hosting our guys!

This is the final call of the spring semester for bags of goldfish crackers for snacktime at Fairmount Elementary School. Please bring your donations to the Little Red House in the Fellowship Hallway. We will make sure they are taken to the teachers for distribution. Grass, Palm, Donkey, Stone
|
Let us conclude the lesson for Lent by contemplating the simple steps that lead us to the complexity of Easter, where, among the followers of Jesus, we find our mowers. They will not process around the Fellowship Hall or down the aisle of the sanctuary on Sunday, but they will process the lawn in preparation. There will be no long fronds waving out front on Palm Sunday, for
Jim White (April 10
-13) will have made sure the leaves of grass are prepared for the celebration of Jesus' triumphant ride into Jerusalem, followed these millennia later by our Sunday stroll into church.
Randy Cook (April 17
-20) will help us onward through Holy Week, toward the empty tomb and the rolled-away stone, as with an eye toward Resurrection, he, too, tends the lawn.

Music Notes |
Sunday's music participants: Pat Flannagan, Bob Greene, Sanctuary Choir.

|
Moses Hogan |
Sunday's music: Palm Sunday is the festival of remembering our Lord's entry into Jerusalem. The service is often celebrated by the blessing and waving of palm branches. We know the outcome of Jesus' time in Jerusalem, but this festival focuses upon his arrival in the city. Our anthem, "Ride On, King Jesus," is an African American spiritual arranged by Moses Hogan (1957-2003), who reignited a fervent interest in performing the spiritual as serious music and not merely as a closer to a concert or as an encore. The text of this spiritual emphasizes the kingship of Jesus, whom "no man can a-hinder."
Organist's footnotes for Palm Sunday: "All glory, laud, and honor, to thee Redeemer King, to whom the lips of children made sweet hosannas ring." Thus begin the words to the familiar hymn to which our children
, and youth acolytes, adult choir members, church staff, and clergy, all process at the beginning of our Palm Sunday service. This hymn tune, known both as "St. Theodolph" and "Valet will ich dir geben," is the basis for all three organ pieces Sunday. Rebecca Groom te Velde (b. 1956)
|
|
|
Emma Lou Diemer |
starts her arrangement of "St. Theodolph" (prelude) in a lively, hard-to-walk-to, 7/8 meter. However, the middle and ending sections do change to the usual 4/4 meter, allowing us better equilibrium. The short setting of "Valet will ich dir geben" (offertory) by J.S. Bach (1685
-1750) is from his Cantata No. 95
Christus, der ist mein Leben. The transcription for organ is by Carl F. Pfatteicher. The Chorale (melody) weaves in and out one phrase at a time, so listen carefully for it. Finally, Emma Lou Diemer (b. 1927 and still actively playing!) has arranged a wild, energetic setting of "Valet will ich dir geben" (postlude) to send us off.
|
|
|
Richard Redhead |
Organist's footnotes for Maundy Thursday: Both prelude and postlude in Maundy Thursday worship are based on the hymn "Go to Dark Gethsemane," which we will sing at the end of the service. This tune is known by several names: "Petra," "Redhead No. 76" (named for its composer, Richard Redhead, 1820
-1901), and "Gethsemane." Philip Moore's (b. 1943) thick-textured, rich setting uses the shape of a Spanish "Tantum Ergo." David Cherwien's (b. 1957) setting alternates from a procession of slow-moving quarter notes played on Principals (pipes), to even slower ethereal sections played on light Strings (thinner pipes), which will make for a quiet ending to our service.
|
|
|
Max Drischner
|
Organist's footnotes for Good Friday: Max Drischner (1891-1971) was a German composer, Kantor, organist, and harpsichordist. His setting of "Aus tiefer Not schrei ich zu dir" ("Out of the depths I cry to you") [prelude] was composed in 1918 and based on the first eight notes of Martin Luther's hymn. Drischner takes these eight notes as the basis for a passacaglia, repeating them over and over again in the pedal, each time adding more and more stops and increasingly complex accompaniment, building tension right up till the final cadence.
The Sanctuary Handbell Choir will play a transcription of W.A. Mozart's (1756-1791) simple yet profound choral anthem "Ave Verum Corpus." The text of that anthem reads:
"Hail, true Body, born of the Virgin Mary,
having truly suffered, sacrificed on the cross for mankind,
from whose pierced side water and blood flowed:
Be for us a foretaste [of the Heavenly banquet] in the trial of death!
O sweet Jesus, O holy Jesus, O Jesus, son of Mary, have mercy on me. Amen."
Sanctuary Handbell Choir: We have a very important rehearsal April 17 to prepare our music for Good Friday and Easter. Join us for practice in room 212. You can reach
Bob Greene at
bobthecomposer@gmail.com or 423-341-0378.
