Palm Beach Moves Toward Pay Raises, Better Pension Plans for Public Safety Employees
The Town Council last week took much-anticipated strides toward improving pay structures and pension plans for police and firefighters that would put those employees more in line with their counterparts in neighboring municipalities. During a special meeting Thursday, council members and town officials discussed the importance of base compensation, merit pay and retirement benefits in attracting and retaining quality employees.

Major Nicholas Caristo, a law enforcement professional for more than 33 years who has been the Acting Police Chief of the Palm Beach Police Department since September 2018, was officially appointed Police Chief by Town Manager Kirk Blouin. "Major Caristo has exhibited the necessary grit, integrity and dedication to this community that will lead the department into the future," said Town Manager Blouin.

One Palm Beach resident is trying to breathe life into CPR training with the community in mind. Last week, Diana Barrett, a member of the Palm Beach Civic Association's Health Care Committee, hosted a cardiopulmonary resuscitation / automated external defibrillator (CPR/AED) session at her home on Everglades Island for 16 neighbors with support from Palm Beach Fire-Rescue. Word spread, and she ended up having to put people on a waiting list.

County tourism leaders have launched a long-awaited plan to expand the Palm Beach County Convention Center, following a record year of hotel bookings for convention events. Last week, Discover The Palm Beaches, the county's tourism marketing arm, sent out a Request for Submittal, seeking proposals, said Glenn Jergensen, chief executive of the county's Tourism Development Council, which oversees Discover The Palm Beaches.
