Education and Spiritual Development Ministry
New Bible Study/Discussion Group Begins July 2nd
There will be a new weekly Bible study and discussion group beginning Monday, July 2nd from 3:00 to 4:15 pm in the Parish Hall. Jane March will lead the group in exploring the topic of spiritual growth by studying one psalm per week. This group will be an exciting time to share stories from our own lives as prompted by the weekly psalm and other related scriptures. My prayer for this group is that we will "journey beyond the familiar and into to unknown, giving us the faith to leave old ways and break fresh ground" with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. (...sound familiar?) Since we will be studying a different psalm each week, the group will be structured so that you will be able to attend as your busy summer schedule permits. Just come when you can and enjoy the sharing and fellowship. Hope to see you there next Monday! Be sure to bring a Bible!

Women's Wilderness Trip: September 4-7, 2018
After ten unforgettable years at Katahdin Lake our annual women's outing was forced by the closing of Baxter's last private campground to find a new spot. After months of investigating many possible sites and visiting the most promising, the planning team has unexpectedly found a gem right under our noses.
To our delight Bishopswood, the Diocese of Maine's own summer camp, offers the essentials of what we have loved about our time apart in the Maine woods: a beautiful natural location, a rustic, environmentally respectful facility and privacy for our group with canoeing, kayaking and hiking at our doorstep and good meals provided.
While this is a departure from the treasured remote wilderness of Katahdin that those who experienced it will never forget, we believe Bishopswood offers the key requirement for us: a place and time for spiritual connection to the creation and each other at a different level than our everyday island life provides.
Bishopswood is about an hour and a half drive from Deer Isle. The facility was built as a girls' sports camp in the 1930s and retains the flavor of that genre and time. The cabins are communal; many now have indoor plumbing -even hot and cold water! Additionally there are two shower houses with several toilets each. The handsome lodge houses the dining hall and separate attractive gathering area with piano and open fireplace.
Laura Gertner, part-time summer cook at the camp and year-round baker of delectable items sampled at the Lincolnville General Store, has agreed to cater our meals.
Here are the details:
- Reservations accepted beginning June 23.
- $100 deposit due by July 15 (refundable until Aug. 1) will secure your place. Balance due Aug. 15.

- Participants bring own bedding, towel, outdoor folding chair.

Sixth Sunday after Pentecost:
Today's liturgy directs our attention to God's care for the poor and less fortunate. In the Gospel reading we hear the account of Jesus' raising the young daughter of the Jewish official, Jairus. Mark inserts within this story the healing of a woman who had suffered hemorrhages for twelve years. The girl and the woman, by the custom of their times, were both regarded as of little value. But Jesus' compassion extends to them as it does to all people.
In the first reading, Saul has died after losing a battle. With him fell his son, Jonathan, who had, in spite of Saul's hatred for David, become David's dearest friend. David defeats the enemy and then sings the song we hear today praising the heroism of Saul and Jonathan, and in one of the most deeply moving passages in scripture, grieves the death of his dear friend.
Paul calls on the Corinthians to emulate the generosity of the churches in Macedonia in contributing to a collection to aid less fortunate Christians. Jesus, Paul reminds us, became poor for us so that we might become rich; that is, he became human so that our humanity might be raised into the life of God. Thus we are to give up ourselves for the sake of others, following Jesus' example and sharing our own material goods.

We pray for the victims of the violence of armed conflicts around the world. We pray for those made refugees by the violence of armed conflicts. We pray for the victims of terrorist attacks everywhere.
We pray for all who suffer the effects of domestic violence and the violence
of bullying in our schools.
We pray for all peacemakers, and all those who work for justice.
We pray for all those serving in the armed forces of our country, remembering, especially, Craig, Chris, Graham, and Caleb.
We pray for all who govern, and we pray for the concerns of our local community, remembering, especially, our children, our young people, and our isolated elderly.
We pray for Justin, Archbishop of Canterbury; Suheil, Bishop of Jerusalem; Michael, our Presiding Bishop; Steve, our Bishop; for the members of our vestry; and for all our members, whose ministries are varied and far-reaching.
In the Diocesan Cycle of Prayer, we pray for
the summer chapel congregations of Trinity, York Harbor and St. Peter's-by-the-Sea, Cape Neddick. For our nation on our upcoming Independence Day.
In the Anglican Cycle of Prayer, we pray for
The Church of North India (United).
On the Island and Peninsula,
we pray for St. Mary Star of the Sea, Stonington.
