BORDELEAU


Karen Bordeleau, NEFAC's president, recently spoke to students at the New England High School Journalism Collaborative workshop. Her appearance is part  of the coalition's Featured Speaker Program. The program was launched in January and is an educational initiative bringing First Amendment and journalism experts to the region's college campuses, high school classrooms and local community centers.  Learn more about our Featured Speaker Program here.   [...]





The Maine state judiciary announced that it will begin posting its 
court records online for public access. The decision - announced June 7 during a public hearing on access to electronic court records - followed multiple rounds of comments submitted by the New England First Amendment Coalition, media groups and other open government advocates.

The New England First Amendment Coalition is pleased to announce two new additions to its board of directors. Joining NEFAC are  Christopher "Topher" Hamblett, president and founder of The  Foundation for West Africa, and Barbara T. 
Roessner, executive  editor  of Hearst Connecticut Media Group.

RHODE ISLAND


MAY 31 LETTER

The New England First Amendment Coalition recently called on Rhode Island Governor Gina Raimondo to veto "revenge pornography" legislation that could criminalize constitutionally protected speech, saying the proposed law would chill news reporting. While Rhode Island bills H-7452A and S-2581A intend to criminalize revenge pornography, they also allow media organizations to be prosecuted for publishing newsworthy images.  [...]

It is our Watergate.  The 38 Studios debacle might not have produced a constitutional crisis or a legal battle (over the Nixon White House tapes) that went all the way to the Supreme Court of the United States.  But Curt Schilling's ill-fated video-game venture certainly produced a monumental crisis here in Rhode Island and now a legal battle (over 38 Studios grand jury records) has gone all the way to the Rhode Island Supreme Court.   [...]
