March 2019 Highlights
Recently, EMWD testified before the Senate Governance and Finance and Environmental Quality Committees, sharing the importance of Senate Bill 414 - The Small System Water Authority Act of 2019 and receiving unanimous support from both committees as well as many other agencies and associations in attendance.

Co-sponsored by EMWD and the California Municipal Utilities Association (CMUA), SB 414 seeks to consolidate small failing water systems to improve economies of scale while addressing governance, technical and managerial issues.

EMWD believes that failing systems need a sustainable approach to operate safely and responsibly, and WITHOUT the need for a permanent statewide water tax. SB 414 can help provide all Californians with access to safe and reliable drinking water, now and into the future.

Thanks to a nearly $70,000 grant from the United States Bureau of Reclamation’s (USBR) WaterSmart program, EMWD is now offering FREE residential drip retrofit kits for qualifying customers to help convert landscape irrigation areas from spray to drip irrigation.

Each drip kit is valued at approximately $245 and includes pressure regulators, drip tubing, connectors and emitters.

The kit provides enough material to convert between 250-400 square feet of planter beds to highly-efficient drip irrigation, which can save up to 60 percent of water per station when compared to traditional spray irrigation.

New guidelines for the program allow for up to two kits per customer, and are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

On Thursday, March 28, EMWD welcomed key partners and community members to the future Perris II Desalter site to break ground on the project.

The event provided attendees with a look at the future brackish water treatment facility and gave EMWD the opportunity to discuss the project and thank key funding partners. Attendees included members of the United States Army Corps of Engineers, the United States Bureau of Reclamation, the State Water Board Resources Control Board, The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California, the City of Menifee, and the County of Riverside.

The event was attended by roughly 60 people and was live streamed on EMWD’s Facebook page for those that were unable to attend.
