Gelardi Student Center: Pardon Our Progress

Construction is active on campus and our capital campaign is underway. The new Drs. Thom and Betty Gelardi Student Center will underscore the institution’s focus on student success, including a new library, bookstore, campus café, large meeting space, student study spaces, lounge areas and more. Thirty-One Complete Doctor of Chiropractic Program

Thirty-one students from around the world received the doctor of chiropractic degree from Sherma n College of Chiropractic in Spartanburg, SC, on Saturday, June 16, 2018. The college’s 133rd commencement was a shared ceremony for June and September 2018 graduates. The commencement address was given by Steve Judson, D.C., a chiropractic educator and trainer and a top speaker at chiropractic seminars and health events around the world. Sarah H. Stephens, D.C., associate professor of clinical sciences and a faculty case doctor at Sherman College, delivered the charge to the graduates . Visits Sherman College

More than a dozen college career counselors and staff members with AutopistaAmericas were treated to the Sherman College experience during a half-day visit to campus on June 4. This was the first group of guests to visit the recently renovated Scallon Building classrooms. The group learned about the chiropractic profession, the curriculum and the philosophy taught at Sherman College; they also enjoyed a campus tour, heard from a panel of students and learned about admission requirements for the doctor of chiropractic program.
 
Pedro Juan Martínez-Torres, school director of Colegio Beato Carlos Manuel Rodríguez in Bayamon, Puerto Rico, said the visit helped him better understand Sherman College’s commitment to student success and its principled program of study. “I was extremely impressed with the chiropractic program,” he said. “The satisfaction of the students who gave us the tour and the passion and emotion with which they spoke to us was impressive.”

Hahn Joins Sherman College
Board of Trustees
 
Frank Hahn, D.C., ’04, has been appointed to the Sherman College of Chiropractic Board of Trustees. His term began on May 5. A 2004 Sherman College graduate, Dr. Hahn is owner and director of a thriving practice, Chiropractic LifeCenter, in Franklin Park, NJ, and he also provides care through Chiropractic for Humanity for Elijah’s Promise, which helps connect individuals and families in need with social and health services.
 
He says his vision is for “every man, woman and child on the planet to become educated about the benefits of chiropractic.” Dr. Hahn appears regularly on IFCO-TV, an online television show he created for the International Federation of Chiropractors and Organizations (IFCO). He is active with the IFCO serves on the board of directors of the Garden State Chiropractic Society. Read more on our blog .
 
In other trustee news, Peter Kevorkian, D.C., stepped down as board chair and Judy Nutz Campanale, D.C., A.C.P., was elected as new board chair; Karlos Boghosian, D.C., was elected vice-chair. In addition, the board thanked Ed Marram, Ph.D., for his service; he resigned from the board after serving for six years as a trustee.
Sherman College to Host Symposium Focused on Human-Animal Bond
 
In anticipation of the 2018 FEI World Equestrian Games in nearby Tryon, NC, Sherman College will host its first annual Spinal Health Symposium on Thursday, September 20, with a special focus on the human-animal bond. The program, titled “Spartanburg, Adjusted,” will include a public reception and private dinner event featuring certified animal chiropractor Dr. Jay Komarek and American Veterinary Chiropractic Association (AVCA) certified veterinarians Drs. Amy Hayek and Bill Ormston.   
 
“Any living being with a spine and nervous system can benefit from chiropractic care,” said Sherman College President Dr. Edwin Cordero. “So it is only natural for us to share the beneficial role of chiropractic in caring for horses and other animals.”
 
Dr. Jay Komarek’s inspiring work with animals has been most recently chronicled in the award-winning documentary, “ Life, Adjusted ,” which highlights the journey of a traumatized horse, Dizzy, to its recovery through chiropractic care, compassion and perseverance. As teachers of animal chiropractic to veterinarians and chiropractors at the Animal Chiropractic Education Source, Drs. Hayek and Ormston add their veterinarian expertise to the symposium. The combination of their extensive experience and love of the equine world will spotlight the value of spinal health for all.
 
The Spinal Health Symposium will highlight the importance of health enhancement through chiropractic and the human-animal bond, and will provide encouragement for proactively working toward improved community health. 'Dreams Coming True' Campaign Receives National Recognition
 
A Sherman College marketing campaign has been recognized with as an honorable mention in the “Marketing Program or Campaign” category of the National Federation of Press Women (NFPW) Communications Contest, an annual competition that encourages and rewards excellence in communication. Before advancing to the national contest, the campaign won top honors in Media Women of South Carolina’s statewide contest.
 
Director of Public Relations Karen Brower Rhodes, part of Sherman College’s Institutional Advancement team, developed the campaign to complement the college’s capital fundraising project, “Dreams Coming True.” The campaign’s main objective is to raise funds for the college’s major campus transformation project, including extensive renovations to the Olsen and Scallon Buildings and the construction of the Gelardi Student Center.
 
Assistant Vice President for Institutional Advancement and Public Relations Ohmar T. Land, D.M., was pleased to see the college’s work honored. “Karen is a tremendous asset to our team,” he said. “Having this work recognized on a national level highlights her passion for creating pieces that really reach the hearts of our audience. I can’t wait to see how else Karen helps take this department to the next level with even more innovation in our communication and marketing efforts.” Read more on our blog.
Cordero Joins Mile High
Chiropractic Weekend Lineup
 
Sherman College President Edwin Cordero, D.C., will join a lineup of high-profile chiropractic speakers August 16-19 at the 2018 Mile High Chiropractic weekend in Denver, CO. The title of his talk will be “Transparency, Authenticity and Leadership in Chiropractic.”
 
The Mile High Chiropractic movement, led by Sherman College graduates Daniel and Richelle Knowles, D.C.s, ’96 and ’99, brings together nearly 30 speakers to give attendees a weekend filled with top-notch content and up to 15 hours of continuing education credit.
 
According to the organization’s website, the focus of Mile High is “helping chiropractic teams around the world increase their certainty, knowledge, vision, philosophy, and strategies of chiropractic.”

Sherman College Student Ambassador Program Thriving
 
The Sherman College Student Ambassador program recruits students who are responsible for giving campus tours to prospective students, as well as aiding in Showcase Sherman Weekends to promote the message that Sherman College has to offer and show why Sherman is the premier college for a chiropractic education.

Ambassadors embody the core values of Sherman College and founding principles of the chiropractic profession with the utmost professionalism. Ambassadors are the role models of Sherman College in bringing chiropractic to the world.
 
The group meets monthly to discuss program business, upcoming visits and events; quarterly dinners provide the opportunity to train and strengthen relationships. The Student Ambassador program has now grown to 25 ambassadors for 2018. Thank you, Student Ambassadors, for representing the college and for your dedication to serving Sherman College of Chiropractic.

The college is reshaping the ROAR program to ensure it is as effective as possible for building the future of the chiropractic profession. “The passion that we all have for sharing chiropractic and Sherman College with the world makes the ROAR program a powerful collective effort, and it also makes directing the program so much fun,” Sherman College Event and Program Manager Emily Wood explained. “Our ROAR members all possess the desire to foster and inspire the next generation of chiropractors, and that passion will continue to grow and shape the profession.”
 
Wood said the ROAR relaunch is designed to better serve members. She is asking that everyone, including current ROAR members, update their information on this form. The deadline for ROAR registration is July 1, 2018. We can’t wait to hear you ROAR LOUDER!

Director of Continuing Education Jillian Kersh, D.C., ’09, and Admission Office Event and Program Manager Emily Wood recently completed the Spartanburg Chamber of Commerce program Leadership Spartanburg, a nine-month course designed to better prepare leaders and volunteers for community service through exploration of issues, challenges and opportunities facing Spartanburg County now and in the future.
 
Director of Public Relations Karen Brower Rhodes has been named vice chair of the board of directors of Safe Homes - Rape Crisis Coalition (SHRCC) in Spartanburg. SHRCC provides services to victims of domestic violence in Spartanburg, Cherokee and Union Counties and victims of sexual assault in Spartanburg and Cherokee Counties. Its mission is to use a collective voice “to address the impact of domestic and sexual violence by providing quality services to those affected and to create social change through education, training, and activism.”

The Art of the Horse Event
 
Assistant Director of Development Hunter F. Mahon represented the college at the unveiling of Dreamer, a painted horse sculpture located at Wall Street and Main in downtown Spartanburg. The Art of the Horse is a public art project based in the Foothills of North and South Carolina; the sculpture was unveiled on May 30. She is pictured with local Spartanburg artist Lalage Warrington, the esteemed sculptor and painter who was selected to paint the horse.
 
“We are hoping that this painted pony will raise awareness to the proximity of the 2018 FEI World Equestrian Games which will be held in Polk County in September and also prompt community members and visitors to seek out the other horses spread throughout the Foothills,” said President and Founder of Our Carolina Foothills Suzanne Strickland. Why Sherman: Being from South Carolina, and knowing an awesome doctor who is an alumnus, and attending Showcase Sherman Weekend in 2016, I knew that Sherman was the right choice for me.

From the warm feeling I received from Ambassadors and the family feel from staff and administration, I knew I had to come to Sherman.
 
Why Chiropractic: For me, chiropractic is more than just correcting subluxations. It’s about giving people a better option in life by increasing their quality of life and allowing them to do what matters most to them. Chiropractic is Life!

August Showcase Sherman Weekend is Approaching

Sherman College is hosting its Showcase Sherman Weekends for 2018 at the AC Hotel in downtown Spartanburg. Due to construction on campus, prospective students and their guests are invited to stay at the new hotel to further enjoy and explore Spartanburg each day after sessions end. Attendees have an opportunity to visit the Sherman College campus for a tour and a palpation session, and they also enjoy a trip to downtown Greenville’s Falls Park. Showcase Sherman Weekend is an event for prospective students to explore chiropractic and Sherman College and is designed to ignite students’ passion for leadership as well as help them begin their pursuit of becoming the next generation of DCs2B. Our next Showcase Sherman Weekends for 2018 are scheduled for August 3-4 and November 2-3, and they will be held off campus at the AC Hotel in downtown Spartanburg during the campus expansion. Employees Raise $575
for United Way of the Piedmont

Sherman College of Chiropractic employees raised $575 during a week-long campaign to support the United Way of the Piedmont.

The college’s gift to the United Way allows for collective community impact because the organization provides support to a multitude of programs – including those aimed at increased graduation rates, economic self-sufficiency, and positive health outcomes – thereby creating a healthier, more prosperous community for everyone.

Health Center Names Intern of the Month

The Chiropractic Health Center faculty recognize an intern each month who excels in clinical performance, patient management, professionalism, and analytical and adjusting technique. The May 2018 Intern of the Month is Michael McIntyre, a thirteenth quarter student from Worcester, MA. He graduates in December 2018 and is currently making practice plans.
