Summer has begun and we're getting ready for the Delta Heritage Forum on Friday, July 20th in Walnut Grove. We hope you can join us for an opportunity to talk with others about advancing Sacramento - San Joaquin Delta and Carquinez Strait heritage.

DELTA HERITAGE FORUM - JULY 20TH

You're invited to the first Delta Heritage Forum on Friday, July 20th from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM at Jean Harvie Community Center, 14273 River Road, Walnut Grove. This event will focus on efforts to preserve and tell Delta stories, opportunities for partnerships and collaboration, and networking. Please sign up for the Delta Heritage Forum here .

The final schedule will be available by Tuesday, July 10th. Sessions are expected to cover the following topics:

  • Proposed Delta National Heritage Area and Delta Heritage Area Initiative
  • Planning for Historic Districts

  • Tips for Grant Applications
  • Storytelling for Small Museums

In the Spring 2018 issue of the Delta Voice , we shared a few threads from the Delta’s heritage tapestry, including the history of Filipino Americans in the Delta, the life and work of author Erle Stanley Gardner, recent adaptive reuse projects, Ryde Hotel’s unique story, and a look back at the time of the steamers through the lens of historic sunken vessels.

ANTIOCH'S EL CAMPANIL THEATRE WINS 2018 ECLECTIC ARCHITECTURE AWARD

El Campanil Theatre, located in Downtown Antioch, was recently recognized by The Art Deco Society of California with their 2018 Eclectic Architecture Award. Every year the Art Deco Society of California presents Art Deco Preservation Awards to the people who have helped preserve the buildings, art, and culture from the Art Deco era. Rick Carraher, Executive Director of El Campanil Theatre Preservation Foundation, was presented with the honor at the Annual Art Deco Preservation Ball and Awards Ceremony in Oakland.

Congratulations to the El Campanil for the award and for its 90th year!

EXHIBITIONS, EVENTS, AND UPDATES
Don't miss the Walnut Grove Buddhist Church Bazaar - June 30th and July 1st
The Walnut Grove Bazaar is coming back June 30th and July 1st from Noon to 5:00 PM both days. There are handmade crafts from locals and traditional Walnut Grove Buddhist Church recipes such as teriyaki chicken, chow mein, sushi, and more. Interactive games for adults and children include Wheel of Fortune, Ring Toss, Scoop the Duck, Bingo, and much more. Enjoy the holiday weekend and support the Buddhist Church of Walnut Grove at their annual fundraiser!
Heritage Days at the San Joaquin County Historical Museum - June 30th and July 28th
Come on out to the San Joaquin County Historical Museum on Saturday, June 30th and Saturday, July 28th for Heritage Day! Enjoy the day feeding and petting critters, learn to make rope, or practice your old-fashion laundry skills and use a washboard. The museum has eight exhibits and four historic buildings, including the 1848 Weber House.
Filipino American History Events in Stockton - July 15th, August 19th and 25th
  • The Filipino American National Historical Society Museum in Stockton is hosting their Afternoon at the Museum series on Sunday, July 15th with speaker Anita Navalta Bautista and Sunday, August 19th with speaker Peter Jamero. Go to the FANHS Museum website for more information.
  • Terry Joven is hosting a film called "The Pinoy Boxing Era" on Saturday, August 25th from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at San Joaquin Delta College's Danner Hall. Admission is free.
Courtland's 46th Annual Pear Fair - July 29th
The Pear Fair has been a Delta tradition since 1972. The largest, continuously running agricultural fair of its kind in Northern California, the Pear Fair is a special event that offers something for everyone. Join us this year on Sunday, July 29th. Our Town Grant Program
Our Town is the National Endowment for the Arts’ creative placemaking grants program. These grants support projects that integrate arts, culture, and design activities into efforts that strengthen communities by advancing local economic, physical, and/or social outcomes. Apply online by August 6, 2018 and the projects could be awarded from $25,000-$200,000 in funding. Visit National Endowment for the Arts' Our Town webpage for more information.

Federal Grant Website

Sacramento City/County Community Development Block Grant program
This grant is for improvements to a public facility valued between $25,000 and $150,000. Application eligibility includes non-profit and government entities or public agencies that are not local units of government. Final applications are due Wednesday, July 18th at 2:00 PM. The Notice of Funding Availability (NOFA) solicitation document is available upon request by emailing Procurement Services at ps@shra.org or calling (916) 440-1378; refer to NOFA #2018021-DS .
