A Message From The Superintendent's Office...

Dear Falcon Community,

U.S. News and World Report released its rankings of high schools throughout the country. I am pleased to report that Monroe Township High School is ranked 57th in New Jersey. This is certainly an accomplishment for our students, teachers, staff and administrators. Thank you to the Board of Education for their support of educational programs and resources that allow our educators and students to excel.

I am also pleased to announce that the Monroe Township Education Association (MTEA) and the Monroe Township Board of Education have ratified Memorandums of Agreement regarding a three-year negotiated agreement.

Now that an agreement has been reached with the MTEA, the Board and Central Administration are returning their focus to a referendum to present to the voters of Monroe Township next year. Student enrollment continues to increase and we need to ensure that students and teachers have the necessary space for a positive learning environment.

During the month of May there are many student concerts, art shows, theater productions and athletic events that demonstrate the outstanding talent of our students. If you are interested in attending any of these events, please view our District Calendar of Events on our website or app.
In this edition of the Falcon Flyer, you will find information regarding the incredible learning opportunities taking place everyday in our schools. In addition, you will find information about school and community events. Please also visit our website, District App Facebook and Twitter to stay informed of District happenings.

Respectfully yours,

Michael Kozak

Mindfulness Matters Day at Oak Tree
By Patty Dinsmore

A few months ago if you had asked an Oak Tree student what they think of when they hear the word mindfulness, they may have replied "peace" or "relaxing".   If you asked them at the end of the day on May 2nd, you may have gotten a completely different response.   Oak Tree held its very first Mindfulness Matters Day on May 2nd. While many students had already been exposed to relaxation techniques, breathing exercises, and maybe even yoga in their classrooms, on May 2nd they truly understood that mindfulness is a way to keep our bodies and minds calm, healthy, and happy. Mindful bodies are peaceful and paying attention.   Today's students live in a nonstop, busy and stressful world where they are constantly forced to multitask and make decisions. By participating in three different stations, Oak Tree children learned that it is okay to not think about anything sometimes, focus on breathing, and close your eyes and use your senses to savor that moment. The stations included breathing exercises and yoga, taking an imagination vacation, and creating a "buddy" from a stone or a pom pom that can help you focus and may even come in handy when you are taking a test or are nervous or anxious in the future. Students came to understand that mindfulness is important to learn so that we can calm our bodies and minds in order to learn, focus, and have fun.

Monroe Township High School's Peace Ambassadors
and G S A Take Part in the Multicultural Fair

On Saturday, April 28 th the MTHS Peace Ambassadors and GSA took part in the third annual Multicultural Fair sponsored by the Monroe Township Human Relations Commission. The Peace Ambassadors had a wonderful display table with information on kindness, diversity and respect. They also had an article on ways to become a "RAKTIVIST" which stands for Random Acts of Kindness activist. There was a suggestion box on the table where visitors could add their ideas on ways to show kindness. The Peace Ambassadors also handed out "Kindness Matters" bracelets.

The GSA had an amazing table with a trifold that shared information, hotlines, history and culture of the LGBTQ+ community. There were also handouts exploring Gender Identity and Expression and LGBTQ+ terminology. They also had several pamphlets sponsored by PFLAG which is an organization that provides information for parents, family, and friends of LGBTQ+ children.
Visitors to the GSA and PA tables showed a lot of interest and support to the students. In the closing ceremony, Lt. Lisa Robinson who was one of the coordinators of the fair, thanked the MTHS Peace Ambassadors and GSA for representing the importance of respect and acceptance of ALL people regardless of culture, ethnicity, race, gender identity and expression or sexual orientation.

Township Students Celebrate Earth Day

Monroe Township students participated in beach cleanup activities  organized by the India-US Forum of Monroe Township, a non-profit organization,  to celebrate Earth Day.    This project was  coordinated under the leadership of Vinisha Patel, a freshman at MTH S. There were 20 students who worked on different teams with full energy and responsibility under the supervision of adults. Participating students were from 3rd grade to seniors and they collected 11 bags of trash and 10 bags of recyclables, that counted approximately 1100 pieces of debris in 3 hours, while on beach cleanup at Asbury Park, NJ.

BROOKSIDE SCHOOL

Fourth Grade EGGStraordinary Egg Drop... Was All It Was CRACKED Up To Be!
It was raining eggs from the roof of Brookside School as the 4th grade attempted its 3rd annual Egg Drop Challenge!  To prepare for the EGGciting event, fourth grade groups had to design and build a contraption that would protect their egg on its journey from the Brookside roof to the unforgiving pavement below. Students were given a "budget", and a list of available materials with different prices. They planned, constructed, and tested their contraptions with plastic 'practice eggs', making revisions based on the results of each test run.

On the big day, the weather proved perfect, and the 4th grade arrived en masse to cheer each other on. Mrs. Nagle and Mrs. Pavese scrambled up to the roof to launch 35 creative contraptions. After the first round, 15 of these protective devices were successfully able to deliver an unbroken egg to the pavement behind Brookside! The event was a great success, and even if some contraptions did not work EGGSactly as hoped, everyone learned a lot and had fun!

Fourth Grade Family Math Night
Smile! Family Math Night, a MTEA FAST sponsored event was held at Brookside School the evening of Thursday, April 12. A huge turnout of fourth graders and their families started the evening making fraction expression selfies and continued by playing games with their families. Students were able to go to different math stations and play games and do activities based on the curriculum. One student loved the Beat the Parent station where they competed against their family member to see who could get more multiplication facts done in a minute, "I almost beat my mom in math facts. I hope they do this next year so I can continue to practice and get more than her next time!"  The 4th grade teachers volunteered their time and felt the event was a great way to reinforce skills, show students math can be fun and get a chance to spend time with students, families and the community. In fact, Angel Pavese, a 4th grade teacher stated, "A special thanks to the MTEA for giving us this super fun opportunity to showcase how great our students and their families are."

WOODLAND SCHOOL NEWS

Congratulations to the 5th grade students as they prepare to enter the Monroe Township Middle School in September, 2018!

The Monroe Township Shade Tree Commission has selected Woodland School to host an Arbor Day event this year.

Our students have participated in many STEM activities including the Breakout.edu kits.   Students worked collaboratively to solve a series of critical thinking puzzles/games to open a locked box to "Breakout".   Mr. Reinhold/Ms. Troiani's class successfully broke out!

MILL LAKE SCHOOL NEWS

Recently, the Mill Lake 3 rd Grade Student council organized an "Autism Awareness Spirit Week". Throughout the week students had: Light it Up Blue Day, Future Day, Animal Day, and a Homeroom Choice day where classes voted on their own theme. While spirit week was fun, more importantly the school community organized a fundraiser where all donations were sent to The Eagles Autism Challenge. The entire Philadelphia Eagles organization and thousands of Philadelphia area residents will be riding, running and walking to raise funds for innovative autism research and programs.  All funds collected will be sent to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, Drexel University, and Thomas Jefferson University and Jefferson Health in support of a collaborative effort to make a lasting impact in the field of autism.

A very successful Take Your Child to Work Day at Oak Tree!

Once again, Monroe Township Elementary Schools participated in our annual
"Souper" Bowl Fundraiser . This event works to raise awareness about hunger, but more so, to replenish our food pantries after the busy season of supporting needy families between Thanksgiving and the Winter Holidays. As a part of this annual event and to foster awareness about this real world issue, children engaged in lessons that were anchored in valued character traits such as empathy, generosity, and compassion. Thanks to our students, staff, and parents we were able to support many local pantries such as St. James the Less Church, Jamesburg Presbyterian Church, The Friends of the Senior Center, and Ginny's Food Pantry. All were extremely grateful for the foods that were donated. In total, we were able to raise over a 1,000 non-perishable food items! Thanks again to all who contributed to our "Souper" Bowl Fundraiser! The Monroe Township Elementary School communities continue to shine when it comes to supporting our schools and pantries.
