SCIOTO COUNTY'S CRISIS RESPONSE TEAM

Scioto Co.'s Crisis Response Team came into being two (2) years ago. The Behavioral Health subcommittee of the Scioto County Health Coalition was setting priorities for work and the discussion turned to the high number of suicides, accidental overdoses and tragic accidents happening in our community, more specifically the high school student population. At that time, there was an informal network, which included a licensed social worker from Hospice and school district counselors, who would put together a group to go to a school, when something happened but there was nothing organized. The number of call outs had been so numerous that the small group of folks who had been responding realized they needed something more formal.

The issue was attacked in two ways: 1. set up a response system and 2. train professional volunteers in a response model so everyone is working out of the same book. Two teams were formed. Each Team is co- lead by 2 LISW's, one from the local mental health center and one from Southern Ohio Medical Center Social Work staff. Depending on the number of people affected, each team has specific days that they are "on call". Team leaders are contacted by the Local Crisis Hotline. Leaders have a phone tree of their team members and contact them to respond to a specific time and place. Protocols were developed that identified roles and responsibilities.   After each incident, the responding team conducts a debriefing, facilitated by one or both of the Team Leaders.

Team members include volunteers.  Volunteers include ministers, school counselors, and other supportive listeners. All Volunteers completed an application process. This process was managed by the ADAMHS Board Director. In addition, all volunteers completed a 6-hour online training, "Psychological First Aid".

The Committee held a Kick Off event in November of 2016, inviting school personnel including, superintendents, community leaders and, county office holders to introduce the Crisis Response Team. In the first year, they responded to 7 incidents at schools.

    WHERE ARE THEY NOW???
STILL CONNECTING THE DOTS!

KATIE BADEN

What was your role at FCFC and how long were you there?

I was the Henry County Family and Children First Council Coordinator for about two and a half years.

Where do you work now and what are you doing?

Currently, I work for the Henry County Family Court and am the Court and Program Administrator.

Was there anything you learned while with FCFC that helped you after you left-professionally and/or personally?

I think the greatest thing I learned both professionally and personally is the power of collaboration. There has not been a project that the court has taken on, or community change within our county that has been tackled without collaboration. I am very blessed to live and work in a community where working together and communication is a priority. We are also blessed to have people within organizations go above and beyond to help each other and people in need.

Is there anything you miss about FCFC?

I miss the comradeship between coordinators, specifically the coordinators I worked with in the surrounding counties.

Thanks Katie!

If you know any former FCFC Coordinators/Directors, or anyone involved with FCFC on a local or state level, please ask them to contact me at suegigaservices@yahoo.comm.  We would love to hear how they are doing.

WEBSITE OF THE QUARTER
SUE GIGA - OFCFCA

I found a great PBS website, developed for parents. It has a ton of information and stuff to do. There is so much on this website that it is really hard to know where to start. You do need to install Adobe Flash Player but it is quick, easy, and free. Even I could do it!

One section, Birthday Parties, helps parents plan theme-specific parties. Themes include science and outer space as well as book/show oriented themes such as Curious George. For each, there are suggestions regarding food, decorations, and activities.  Another section focuses on Child Development. Age-appropriate activities, videos, games, and suggestions for apps are provided in areas such as emotions and self-awareness, social skills, literacy, and math. "Teaching Your Four-Year Old to Care for Others" and "Help Your Eight-Year Old Learn to Love Math" are examples of the topics covered.  The Education section covers a wide range of articles about topics such as math, reading,   going to school, bad behaviors, and learning disabilities. "What Not to Say to Emerging Readers" is one such article.  For each, there are easy to implement activities for parents to use. There are dozens of fun games and activities that foster early learning. My favorite section, of course, is
Fun and Games. There is a wide variety of craft ideas, coloring pages, activities, and online games. There is also a Food and Fitness section which focuses on topics such as healthy eating and benefits of family dinners. There are links to recipes for healthy snacks such as Back-to-School Granola Bars and Crunchy Roasted Chickpeas. Another section, Parenting, provides advice and tips for dealing with challenging situations such as military families, death, and financial struggles. I particularly liked the article "Things Boys Do- and Girls Should Too". You will find a lot of other useful articles about raising girls. There is so much free on this website, it is not really fair to call it "commercial" but there is a section for items you can buy. Prices are reasonable and the items will be of interest to parents (and grandparents) with children very tied in to one or more PBS children's shows. Worth a look especially if you are looking for an unusually birthday gift. The website is geared to parents but would be useful to anyone who works with children. I hope you will take a look at this website and suggest it to all who might be interested.

HERE'S WHAT YOU THINK!

Question of the quarter:

If you could only eat ONE food for the rest of your life, what would it be?

PIZZA
Got two votes.

I may be cheating but I  would say PIZZA because I'm assuming different topics would be allowed: veg, fruit, meat etc....could cover all my nutritional needs.  Sandy Smoot (Warren)

PIZZA!!!!! (Maggie Henry (Clinton)

SALAD

One food for the rest of my life? That's a really tough question!  The devil on my shoulder is telling me SUGAR COOKIES.   The practical side is saying-SALAD , with lots of toppings (CHEESE, CHICKEN, OLIVES, CRANBERRIES, etc-maybe even a SUGAR COOKIE). Donna Fox-Moore (Fairfield)

AVOCADO

Because you can do so many things with it...eat, make a face mask...:) Denise Myer (Portage)

CHICKEN

CHICKEN!!!!! Judy Weisend (Noble)

CHOCOLATE

Chocolate! Brooke Pauley (Meigs)

CHEESECAKE

Margaret Osborne (Ottawa)

ICE CREAM

KALE.  No, only kidding, no one sane would pick KALE.  It would be ICE CREAM..  I wouldn't live that much longer if that's all I ate-but I would be happy while I did.  Definitely ICE CREAM, but FUDGE BROWNIES is a close second. Jane Whyde (Franklin)

SEAFOOD

Ready...SEAFOOD! Ha!.  I really thought about this.  I was just going to list foof, in general, but thought you would ask me to be more specific!  I think Seafood is specicic but it doesn't limit my choices.  I thought about PIZZA, CHIPOTLE, PASTA of sme sort, Fruits and vegetables, but SEAFOOD came to mind.  There you go...Kanda Benner (Morrow)

TOP FIVE

1. SALAD
There's so much you can do with SALAD!!
2. BURRITOS

NATIONAL IMMUNIZATION MONTH

August is National Immunization Awareness Month (NIAM). The purpose of designating a month is to raise awareness of the importance of immunizations for people of all ages. This is an excellent opportunity to share information and resources with members of your council and your community. There are two websites to check out. Each contains a variety of information and resources for spreading the word. There are communication toolkits, resources, and videos. You should also check with your local health department to see what they are doing and if there are ways you can support and complement their efforts.
