City of Orillia: Seeking Qualified Candidates To Redevelop Waterfront Lands
RFQ Launches Two-Phase Sale Process For Lands at 70 Front St. N.
Media Release
For immediate release (April 9, 2019)
- The City of Orillia has taken another big step towards the future redevelopment of the municipal waterfront lands at 70 Front St. N. The official Request for Qualifications (RFQ) document, outlining the phenomenal redevelopment opportunity, was released on April 9, 2019.
"The RFQ is a very exciting milestone in the overall waterfront redevelopment project. We look forward to hearing from developers who not only qualify for a project of this magnitude, but who share Orillia's vision for the site. Council purchased this strategic property to facilitate the extension of Coldwater Street to Centennial Drive and to ensure the site's future redevelopment matches, and even further enhances, the unique character of Orillia that we all know and love," said Mayor Steve Clarke.
As a shared vision between the City and the developer is crucial to the success of this project, the 9.75-acre site will be sold through two phases. The first phase is the RFQ, which determines a shortlist of qualified proponents who share Council's vision. The second phase is the Request for Proposals (RFP), which invites the shortlisted proponents to submit their detailed redevelopment proposal for the site.
To ensure the redevelopment is in keeping with Orillia's character and fits well within the downtown waterfront area, the Waterfront Working Group established 12 development principles that are included in the RFQ and by which all proposals will be evaluated. The development principles are:
1.
Supports the City's Downtown Tomorrow Plan and vision
2.
Optimize financial return
3.
Demonstrates a sustainable "green" approach
4.
Enhances the resident and visitor experience
5.
Responds to surrounding built form
6.
Integrated within Orillia's downtown and waterfront area
7.
Considers downtown food and grocery needs
8.
Consists of simple and timeless design
9.
Consists of a high quality public realm
10.
Promotes safe, comfortable and inviting pedestrian environment
11.
Integrated approach to parking
12.
Integrated approach to servicing
"The development principles include community driven values such as walkability, public realm space, and integration into the existing area, as well as economic development objectives such as increased employment and increased residential population," said Laura Thompson, Manager of Real Estate and Commercial Development. "These principles will ensure that the significant public input received through consultation on the Downtown Tomorrow Plan, the Port of Orillia Public Realm, and Downtown Tomorrow Community Improvement Plan is reflected in the future redevelopment of the site."
The RFQ for the waterfront redevelopment project closes April 30, 2019, and the shortlist of qualified developers will be announced publicly in late May. It is anticipated the RFP will be released by the end of June and development proposals will be due in the fall of 2019. There will be an opportunity in the fall for members of the public to view the development proposal concepts and offer their feedback prior to the successful developer being selected.
For more information on the RFQ and to sign up for updates, visit the project webpage at orillia.ca/waterfront.

OMAH: STYLING ORILLIA: A Look Ba
ck At Our Community's Fashionable Past
April 6th to June 30th
The Franklin Carmichael Gallery
Opening reception: Thursday, April 25, 2019 7-9 pm
Clothing might have made the man, but it is the woman who made it be about style. Textiles and their accessories play a major role in establishing identity and contribute to an understanding of economy and social culture and customs.
With garments and accessories selected from OMAH's permanent collection, "Styling Orillia" showcases Canadian fashion, made by hand or purchased locally and styled by Orillia women. Shifts in hemlines, selections of fabric, and changes of silhouettes on garments from the 1920's-1960's are showcased. Due to their fragility and sensitivity to light, many of these objects have not been on display before. This exhibition is not just about the garments and accessories; it is about style.
"I love clothes and always have some it is really hard to choose a favourite outfit as I have so many that I have truly loved over the years. Many times I have loved them not only for the outfit itself, but for the memories it invokes." -Councillor Pat Hehn, her prom dress from the 1960's will be on display.
For more information about exhibitions, please contact Ninette Gyorody, Executive Director at 705-326-2159 x101 or by email.

Kelli Dove's animal series, painted in oils on paper, is a glimpse of her close encounters with animals as a child in the Kawarthas. Each animal holds a memory and a story. She has reimagined them in a way that suits their personalities. There is some influence from their behaviours and how we, as Canadians, perceive them. Each painting demonstrates Dove's strong technical skills and her influence of pop culture.
Kelli Dove (b. 1977) grew up in Bobcaygeon, Ontario. In 1999, she received a Diploma in Fine Arts from the School of Design and Visual Arts, Georgian College. She had the privilege of studying with Ted Fullerton, John Hartman, Tim Zuck, and Laura Millard. Dove primarily paints portraits, many of which are in collections throughout Canada and the United States as well as in the private residence of the former prime minister of Bermuda.

Lakehead University: Formally Adopts the Okanagan Charter
Media Release
Lakehead University is placing the health and well-being of students, faculty and staff at the forefront with the formal adoption of the
Okanagan Charter: An International Charter for Health Promoting Universities and Colleges.
The
Charter was signed on Wednesday by Dr. Moira McPherson, Lakehead's President and Vice-Chancellor, during a special event held at the University's Thunder Bay campus, and by Principal Dr. Dean Jobin-Bevans, at the University's Orillia campus.
An outcome of the 2015 International Conference on Health Promoting Universities and Colleges, the Charter calls on post-secondary institutions to embed health and well-being into all aspects of campus culture, including the development of policies, procedures and practices.
This commitment to student, faculty and staff health and well-being inside and outside of the classroom is an essential element of the University's 2018-2023 Strategic Plan.
"We recognize that promoting health and well-being is necessary to achieving our vision of providing a transformative university experience, which is why Lakehead University has taken the step to adopt the Okanagan Charter," explained Dr. McPherson.
"Exceptional scholarship and student potential are sustained by the mental and physical health of our people, and a healthy and supportive campus environment. We want to embed this notion into all aspects of campus culture and across operations," she added.
As part of the adoption of the Charter, Lakehead University has committed to developing a comprehensive, campus-wide Wellness Strategy that will support, encourage and inspire a culture of health and well-being for all who study and work at the university.
Andrea Tarsitano, Vice-Provost (Students) and Registrar, is co-lead of the newly formed Wellness Advisory Committee that will be leading the development of the strategy.
"Our goal is to promote the idea that health and wellness isn't just the responsibility of one particular department, but that advancing health and wellness needs to be a commitment across all disciplines and departments within our university community," she said.
"There will be many opportunities for students, faculty and staff to get involved and provide their visions of what a healthy campus looks like."
Consultations for Lakehead University's Wellness Strategy will begin in the coming months.
Elder Gerry Martin signs the Okanagan Charter at Lakehead Thunder Bay while Dr. Moira McPherson, Lakehead's President and Vice-Chancellor, watches.
Principal Dr. Dean Jobin-Bevans signs the Okanagan Charter with Elana Weber, Student Wellness and Athletics Coordinator, on the Orillia campus.
