We have not heard from everyone in the parish in response to the 2018 Annual Catholic Appeal - if you have not yet given this year and you gave last year, please consider increasing your gift by 5% this year. If you did not give last year, would you consider a gift of a dollar a day ($365)? Gifts of any amount are welcome, and your gift will make a big impact on many lives!
Help us achieve the largest Annual Catholic Appeal in the history of our parish! Your gift will also help us fund our parish project once we surpass our goal and start collecting our rebate! It's not just about the money we raise for more than 60 ministries and services, but more importantly, it's about all of us participating to help support the mission of the Church in Western Washington.
Thank you! Your gift will help to build the lives of friends and neighbors in communities just like ours and throughout the region.

Pat King

Our parishioner and proud 1949 graduate of St John School, Pat King, has reached another milestone in her life. She has moved into an assisted living facility and is selling the house we all know and love on the corner across from the old rectory. In addition to attending daily Mass regularly, she gave 24 years of service at the King County Jail in conjunction with the archdiocesan Criminal Detention Prison Ministry. Pat led weekly Communion Services, Rosary and visited inmates on a one-on-one basis for many years. She earned the name "Flower Lady" as she was the only person who was allowed to bring bouquets of fresh flowers from her garden to her various services. It gave inmates the opportunity to smell fresh flowers and feel the soft "lamb's ears" petals. She has prayed with so many people, in Spanish and English, through all the times of their lives.

If you are interested in learning more about the Jail Ministry or would like to send something to Pat, contact the Parish office. 206-782-2810

My favorite parts of the mass are the songs we sing.  I'm startled by how frequently I read lines in the psalms or daily mass readings and hear a melody in my head because of the songs I've sung in church over many years.  It makes me feel at home in the Bible, and helps me remember way more verses than I would on my own.  Sheila will tell you that I often hum or whistle the recessional hymn as we walk home from church.

I was really struck by the communion meditation song during last weekend's 10:30 mass.  For years, one of my standard prayers, something I pray every day, has been, "Lord, help me to become the man you want me to be."  The unspoken subtext is "because I've muffed it so far, and need your help".  Well, last week's communion meditation was Take, O Take Me As I Am, #767 from the red Worship hymnal.  The words are:

Take, O take me as I am;
summon out what I shall be;
set your seal upon my heart and live in me.

I've been singing/praying it in my head, any time my mind is quiet, ever since.  It's short and easy to sing.  Like TaizĂ© music, you can repeat it over and over again.  It captures the prayer of my heart, and puts it to music.  You can't really do better than that.

If you have prayer nuggets you'd like to share with the parish, email Bill Marty, bill@takenroad.com.  Thanks!
