Happy July 4th to everyone!
A huge thank you to all the curriculum committee members across the state. As a result of all your hard work, Senior College Fall catalogs are moving closer to completion by the day. A few
"Early Bird" Senior Colleges have already posted their Fall classes.
Two Senior Colleges have sent news of upcoming activities. The Gold LEAF Institute are preparing for their
art show of members work. And, Acadia Senior College launch this year's
"Best of Acadia Series" in collaboration with the College of the Atlantic.
I see field trips to the Osher Map Library on the Portland campus of the USM in the not too far off future. The campus recently received
a gift of rare maps valued at $100 Million from Dr. Harold Osher.

Gold LEAF artists set up show
As Solstice was coming round, the Gold LEAF artists were delivering their wide range of artistic objects to the Emery Community Arts Center on the campus of U Maine Farmington. The Center sits adjacent to the Merrill Center on Academy Street. The art will be on exhibit through August 10, so plenty of summer guests will be able to come and walk through to see and appreciate the art on display.
On June 18, over the course of the morning, there was a steady stream of Gold LEAF members arriving with varied objects in hand: hand-made drums, carvings, sketches, mobiles, triptychs, reverse paintings on glass, photography, watercolors and oils, stained glass lamps and kaleidoscopes, digital photos, and more.
The show was hung by staff members Stan and Michael over the course of that third week of June, with an opening reception set for the evening of Friday, June 22. The Flex space gallery, under the direction of Ann Bartges, will host the artwork through the first half of the summer, till August 10. Hours at the gallery are Wednesdays through Saturdays, noon till 5 p.m.

Gold LEAF Senior College Board invites senior college members throughout the state (and their summer guests) to come take a walk through the show, and perhaps enjoy other Farmington treasures ranging from Reny's to a restaurant stop to the town Walk-about Farminton historical walk. We'll be happy to see you, and hope that other senior colleges will consider doing this sort of event for their "artistic members.'

Annual Membership Meeting on June 6, 2018 York County Senior College (YCSC) unveiled a brand new website developed by Susan Winch. They also showcased an excellent recruitment video created by
YCSC volunteer and videographer Kathleen Porter.

The fourth annual summer Best of Acadia week co-sponsored by Acadia Senior College and College of the Atlantic focuses on higher education and public policy and features five distinguished educators, all of whom have also served in national or state positions beyond their current institutions.
One of our presenters addresses public policy directly, outlining his research into ways to resolve issues of poverty in America; another approaches indirectly by commenting on why art should matter. We will also hear some radical ideas for re-shaping higher education, an explanation of how an apparently single-focus college prepares graduates for many different careers, and the ways in which a small nearby college prepares its students to address the largest and most complex global issues.

Coffee and Conversation - Tuesday, July 17 at 9 a.m.
Filmmaker Olympia Stone and Catherine Clinger will show clips from and discuss Stone's latest film about the award-winning American sculptor Elizabeth King. Best of Acadia participants are welcome to attend this regular COA Tuesday morning event.
All talks will be in Gates Auditorium on the COA campus.
The week concludes with a sunset cruise on Frenchman Bay on Friday evening, July 20th from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. leaving from the Bar Harbor Pier. Seating is limited for the cruise so sign up early.
Weekly passes for the speaker series are $75 (includes the Friday sunset cruise).

The lecturer is asked "to reflect on a lifetime of work as a scholar and an institution builder, on the motives, the chance determinations, the satisfactions (and dissatisfactions) of the life of learning, to explore through one's own life the larger, institutional life of scholarship."
