Greetings from Director Hui

As we continue to celebrate Building Safety Month this May, I want to reiterate our Department's commitment to ensuring building and life safety of the 200,000 residential and commercial buildings in San Francisco. Each person who visits, works and lives in San Francisco has a role to play in addition to the 280 employees that make up the Department of Building Inspection. Each employee plays a pivotal role in the successful implementation and delivery of our services and programs every day.
I want you to meet some of our staff...
Permit Technician staff from Inspection Services (3rd Floor)
Central Permit Bureau staff (1st Floor)
Records Management Division staff (4th Floor)

Our office at 1660 Mission has six floors offering professional service and we are typically open from 7:30AM-5:00PM, Monday-Friday, except on legal holidays. We not only issue permits and schedule inspections, but ensure that any and all construction and maintenance of new and existing buildings in San Francisco is done so safely, professionally, and on time. This requires the work of many divisions whom handle a variety of different functions and responsibilities. For example, our Central Permit Bureau on the first floor accepts and issues construction permits while our Plan Review Services on the second floor reviews and approves all permit applications to assure proposed work meets life and structural safety. Come visit our office today!

DBI has worked with the Mayor's Office and our partners at the Planning Department on a proposed ordinance to waive both Departments' plan review fees as an incentive to property owners participating in the voluntary legalization of in-law units. This was added to this year's budget and thus, will likely take legal effect in August 2015. Also, Supervisor Scott Weiner's Ordinance No. 30-15 on the Addition of Dwelling Units, mentioned in the March issue, during a seismic retrofit also has been approved. It took legal effect during the last week of April. If you are interested in taking advantage of this new voluntary program, please see ordinance and information sheet here.
