Cornerstone Bank EVP & CAO Susan Gunnell to Retire
After many years of dedicated service, Susan Gunnell will retire from her role as Executive Vice President & Chief Administrative Officer. She will remain with the bank through April 2020 and help coordinate an effective transition for the executive team.
Ms. Gunnell began her lengthy career at Southbridge Savings Bank in 1980 as a teller and steadily made her way through the ranks to ultimately become that institution's second-in-command. Her various positions there included assistant bookkeeper, accounting manager, human resources manager, and SVP of retail banking.
Sue received well-deserved recognition throughout her professional life-not only at Southbridge Savings Bank, but also after it merged with SpencerBANK to become Cornerstone Bank. Ms. Gunnell helped to expand the Bank's training program and participated in community work that received acknowledgement from the United Way as well as many other associations. She has been actively involved in the Bank's Charitable Donations Committee decision-making for numerous local nonprofits, and worked with the Bank to promote drives for school supplies, local food banks, and local heating assistance programs. In addition, Sue was a Worcester Business Journal "Outstanding Women in Business" award recipient in 2015.
"To say we'll miss Sue doesn't even begin to express our heartfelt feelings," said Cornerstone Bank President & Treasurer Todd M. Tallman. "She is as dedicated today to helping others as when she first started. We will miss her beyond words and wish her much happiness."
"Sue's contributions over almost four decades have been exemplary, enabling us to continually grow, while still maintaining our focus on the communities we serve," stated Cornerstone Bank Chairman & CEO K. Michael Robbins. "Sue has never lost her enthusiasm or passion for her work here. We wish her all the best."

Join TLGV for a First-Ever Citizen's Science Effort to Protect Starry Skies
The Last Green Valley, Inc. (TLGV) is launching a new citizen science effort to protect the starry skies of the National Heritage Corridor.
The Last Green Valley National Heritage Corridor was designated in 1994, in part because it was the last large corridor between Boston and Washington D.C. where lights were not visible to airline pilots. On the ground that means the Milky Way can still be seen on a clear night. But, the skies are not as starry as they were 25 years ago.
"We are losing the stars because of light pollution," said Lois Bruinooge, executive director of TLGV, the non-profit that stewards the national heritage corridor of the same name. "This is actually an easy problem to fix, and it's not just about turning off lights. It is about having the lights shine where they are needed and not up into the sky, wasting money and causing issues for wildlife and people."
The first step is creating a team of citizen scientists known as Night Sky Rangers. The team will begin collecting light pollution data from all 35 municipalities in the National Heritage Corridor. Citizen scientists are still needed!
A training for Night Sky Rangers will be held at 5:30 p.m., Nov. 14, at the TLGV offices, 203B Main St., Danielson, CT. (On the 2nd floor of Key Bank).
The training will give a short explanation about light pollution and why it is a concern. We will also move outside and demonstrate how the data will be collected.
After the training, volunteers will have a chance to sign up to be a Night Sky Ranger and be assigned locations and a time frame for data collection. For more information about the training or the Night Sky Ranger program, please contact TLGV Assistant Director Francesca Kefalas at 860-774-3300 or email fran@tlgv.org
The Last Green Valley is a National Heritage Corridor - the last stretch of dark night sky in the coastal sprawl between Boston and Washington, D.C. The Last Green Valley, Inc. works for you in the National Heritage Corridor. We help you to care for it, enjoy it and pass it on.

Harrington Earns an "A" in Hospital Safety Report
Grade represents 13th time the healthcare system has earned highest marks for patient safety
In a report just released by The Leapfrog Group, Harrington Hospital has earned an "A" in the Fall 2019
Hospital Safety Grade
report.
The report offers transparency on how well hospitals nationwide protect patients from errors, accidents, injuries and infections by offering public letter grades. The score represents how hospitals address common quality concerns, including handwashing and surgical outcomes.
This is the 13th "A" grade awarded to Harrington since the program's inception in 2012.
"We are extremely proud to remain one of the safest hospitals in central Massachusetts," said President and CEO Ed Moore. "Patient safety is everyone's top priority at Harrington. Our departments work seamlessly to ensure our quality measures are being constantly reviewed. To earn 13 "A" grades in seven years is an incredible accomplishment, but not one that takes me by surprise, given the extraordinary effort and dedication demonstrated by our staff."
The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade uses 28 measures of publicly available hospital safety data, including the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), to assign A, B, C, D and F grades to more than 2,000 U.S. hospitals twice per year.
Leapfrog works under the guidance of an Expert Panel to select appropriate measures and develop a scoring methodology. The Expert Panel is made up of patient safety experts from across the country. The methodology is peer-reviewed and published in the
Journal of Patient Safety
.
"'A' hospitals show us their leadership is protecting patients from preventable medical harm and error," said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. "It takes genuine commitment at every level - from clinicians to administrators to the board of directors - and we congratulate the teams who have worked so hard to earn this A."
In October 2017, Harrington was one of only 59 hospitals in the United States and the only hospital in central Massachusetts to be awarded twelve straight "A" grades since 2012. Since then, Harrington has also earned two "B" grades, in the fall of 2018 and the spring of 2019. Due to a change in methodology which impacted many smaller community hospitals, Harrington was not graded in the spring of 2018.

North Brookfield Savings Bank Kicks Off
2019 School Banking Program at Local Schools
$uperhero $avers School Banking Program Provides Youth Financial Education
North Brookfield Savings Bank Branch Supervisor and North Brookfield Elementary School Banking Leader Jessica Shimansky with the Principal of North Brookfield Elementary School Sarah Priestley.
North Brookfield Savings Bank believes in giving the youth of their communities every advantage to help them succeed now and in the future. It is never too early for children to learn healthy saving habits, so it is no wonder that North Brookfield Savings Bank is getting the ball rolling in their local communities with financial education for elementary students.
North Brookfield Savings Bank's $uperhero $avers School Banking Program brings financial education and support directly to the children in their local communities. The Bank's School Banking Program is a staple at North Brookfield Elementary School, Brookfield Elementary School and East Brookfield Elementary School and is expected to expand into many more local schools. As a part of the program, on scheduled days, school banking leaders from North Brookfield Savings Bank visit the schools to interact with the children, help them to learn the importance of healthy savings habits, and assist them with their deposits.
"The earlier that healthy financial habits are introduced to a young person, the more likely they are going to continue those positive habits into their adult life," said Patty Ostrout, North Brookfield Savings Bank Senior Vice President of Retail Banking. "North Brookfield Savings Bank is so happy to be able to support our communities and invest in the education of our children through our School Banking Program, and help to get them started on the path to financial success."
NBSB encourages all children to become $uperhero $avers and participate in their School Banking days. By visiting their School Banking table on the scheduled School Banking days all children can receive a colorful $uperhero $avers League Stamp Card. The cards are intended to encourage positive saving behaviors, with the young bankers receiving a stamp each time they make a deposit. Once they receive 5 stamps they can turn in their card to choose a special prize. Children also have a chance to win a monthly drawing which reminds them to visit the table with their deposits.
"I love doing school banking and visiting with the children at East Brookfield Elementary School. They are so eager to learn and we are happy to help them achieve financial success," said Renee Jurczyk, East Brookfield Assistant Branch Manager and East Brookfield Elementary School Banking Leader. "We've found that the stamp card excites the students and makes them want to continue to deposit their money. They feel proud when they've earned their prize and along the way are provided with the opportunity to make real-life financial decisions."
Now it is a couple months into school banking and the $uperhero $avers Program is proving to be popular with an increase in student interest and involvement.
Principal of North Brookfield Elementary School, Sarah Priestley, was excited to introduce the program into the school's curriculum, "North Brookfield Elementary School is excited to offer NBSB's School Banking Program at our school. Giving students a chance to learn the importance of saving at an early age gives them an advantage that will serve them later in life," she said. "School banking empowers kids to learn about money, apply real world math skills, and introduces them to the concept of financial literacy and responsibility. NBES is thrilled to partner with North Brookfield Savings Bank, a steadfast supporter of education in our town, to provide this opportunity to our students."

New Year's Eve Fireplace Feast
Start with some hors d'oeuvres by the fireplace as you watch your prime rib roasting to perfection on a device dating back to 1700. Take a horse drawn sleigh/wagon ride through the back fields then chase the chill away with some nice, hot, mulled cider or wine. Relax, help make apple pie using an antique apple peeler and corer, or make seafood chowder in an antique iron cauldron right in the fieldstone fireplace.
Next, get ready for the main feast! Start off with a champagne toast to the New Year, then sit back for dinner. You'll be served your fireplace seafood chowder and prime rib* (and later you'll be offered seconds!). In addition, there will be bowls of fresh butternut squash, spinach pie and oven roasted potatoes. Don't fill up on the homemade rolls, even though they are quite delicious, because you'll want to save some room for the scrumptious deep dish apple pie with fresh whipped cream.
Later, it's time to go downstairs to the Chestnut Room where a DJ will be playing and you can dance right through the midnight hour! Wear a party hat and use those noisemakers! It's a great way to ring in the New Year!
*
If prime rib doesn't tickle your fancy, salmon will be offered as well. Just order it when you purchase your tickets.
Arrive at 6:30pm - Feast begins at 8:00pm
Adults (13 yrs and over) $85 | Kids (12 yrs and under) $60 | includes all taxes and gratuities.
