The Kansas Teacher of the Year site visit was held earlier this week at Emporia Public Schools. KTOY representatives including Kelly Olson and Laura Schwinn from Emporia toured district facilities and programs as a part of their visit.

District News
2020-21 School Calendar Options:  District administration has worked with the Professional Development Council to create three academic calendar options for the 2020-21 school year. Please review the three options shown below and provide feedback in the form provided at the end. A recommendation will be made to the Emporia Board of Education later this spring. Feedback is needed by the end of the day Thursday, April 25, 2019.

Maintenance Department Summer Help: Maintenance is looking to fill some temporary summer position for mowing, grounds care, and building maintenance.  Current employees interested in applying should contact Amy Larson [email protected].  Persons who are interested but not already a USD 253 employee should go to the website to apply.
 

K-State Athletics: K-State will be participating in the College Football Playoff's Extra Yard for Teachers program.  This upcoming season's designated game is September 7th against Bowling Green. If you would like to represent Emporia Public Schools, please email [email protected] to express your interest.  One staff member will be randomly chosen.  The selected person will receive two complimentary tickets to the game, be recognized with all districts' representatives during the game, and have the opportunity to win $500 for a classroom project.

Kindergarten Pre-registration:
Pre-registration for kindergarten will be held at each neighborhood elementary school on April 16, at 6:00 pm and April 17, at 9:00 a.m. Parents will meet principals and school staff as well as learn about enrollment and admissions requirements.  Parents only need to attend one session and your child does not need to be present. For more information contact the elementary school nearest you or call Mary Herbert Education Center at 620-341-2200 for assistance locating your elementary school.

Preschool Enrollment:
Tuesday, April 23, 7 am to 5 pm, Maynard Early Childhood Center at 19 Constitution will be available to enroll 3 and 4-year-olds who meet eligibility requirements.  Please bring the student's birth certificate, immunization records and a copy of the child's most recent physical.

End of the Year Transportation Requests:
When planning your end of the year field trips, please keep the following information in mind.
  • before picking the day, have a couple of dates in mind
  • contact Erin in dispatch to see what days are available, [email protected]
  • turn in trip requests as soon as possible; the calendar is filling up
  • if possible avoid Tuesday and Thursday due to a large number of athletic events
  • trips that leave after 8:00 am on M,T,TH,F or 9:00 am on W, and return by 2:15 pm are easier to accommodate
Bovay Foundation Educators' Grant: 
The Harry E. Bovay Jr. Foundation is offering a $5,000 grant to be used for professional development of public school educators in Lyon County.  Any teacher who is interested in pursuing a Master's degree or higher is eligible to apply.  Click here for more information

The Bunny Hop 5K:
Riverside Elementary will host the annual Bunny Hop 5K on Saturday, April 20, 2019, at 8:00 am.  Funds raised will support the Riverside PTO/RIF Program and the Emporia NEA Read To Your Bunny Program.   For Registration Form Click Here

Village Elementary held an assembly to announce being named a Capturing Kids Hearts National Showcase school for the second year in a row.


District administrators celebrated trimester graduates who earned their diploma and/or citizenship at the on-site classroom at a local processing plant.

Board Updates
  • Zach Snethen of HTK Architects provided an overview of the progress that has taken place over the past two weeks with the facility needs assessment. The needs assessment team continues to discuss and refine the scope of the potential bond project. A review of each building's mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems was done to determine efficiencies and what the high priorities are versus what could be included in future projects through capital outlay funds. HTK continues to provide a wealth of information to help the board move forward in making informed decisions regarding all aspects of the potential bond project.
  • Dustin Avery of Piper Jaffray Financing provided board members with details and logistics of the bond process and the financial impact to the community.   He also shared a detailed timeline outlining important dates to begin the bond process.
